The Athletic’s Feldman and Auerbach identify Washington State AD Chun, Washington AD Cohen, Pittsburgh AD Lyke, Villanova AD Jackson, UCLA AD Jarmond, TCU AD Donati, Wake Forest AD Currie and Florida Executive Assoc. AD for Administration Tealer as names to keep an eye on as USC searches for its next AD. Other candidates “worth a look,” according to Feldman and Auerbach, are UTSA AD Campos, Ohio AD Cromer, Texas Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Sports Administration Baumgartner, Army West Point AD Buddie and former UC Davis AD/current Golf Canada Chief Sport Officer Blue. While many of these names have circulated over the last several days, one that hasn’t is Jackson, about whom Feldman and Auerbach write: “No other AD who will get consideration knows USC as well as Jackson, a 50-year-old Pete Carroll protege. The one-time New England Patriots assistant coach played a vital role in USC’s athletic department raising $300M. … He also managed a massive renovation project of the Coliseum. But there might be some reluctance to bring back someone from that era who was involved in the hiring of Steve Sarkisian.” (link)

Neinas Sports Services President/former Big Eight Commissioner Neinas, whom the Los Angeles Times’ Kartje and McCollough describe as former USC AD Bohn’s mentor, reacts to Bohn’s departure: “Well, I’d say, number one, it’s bull—, but then I’m not objective. He brought in Lincoln Riley, which was one hell of a move, and turned the football program around, created much more interest in Trojan athletics. And then the opportunity to triple their income going to the Big Ten Conference, putting the institution at a very solid financial condition, and he’s voted athletic director of the year by his peers. You’d say the guy is on a roll, wouldn’t you?” Regarding allegations of a toxic work environment, Neinas remarks: “You can talk to anybody in the college athletic business, and they will tell you that Mike Bohn is one of the friendliest people in the business. … He has a great sensitivity about him, which makes the accusations relative to his treatment of women suspect in my opinion.” Lots more. The Oklahoman’s Tramel cites a Big 12 source who says Colorado is ready to commit to joining the Big 12 “soon.” Tramel adds: “I thought it was interesting but not necessarily a revelation. Lots of talk in this realignment-crazed era of college sports. Most of it not written on tablets descending from Mount Sinai. But the Colorado comment has a lot more juice after the events this week,” most notably Washington State’s announcement that it was instituting a spending freeze. “Plus, CBS reported a couple of weeks ago that Big 12 officials were told by ESPN that the Big 12 would be one of three leagues (along with the Southeastern and Atlantic Coast conferences) that ESPN would air in terms of a Tier 1 level. All of which casts further gloom on the Pac-12's financial future.” (link)

Lawmakers in Oklahoma have overridden Governor Stitt’s veto of Senate Bill 840, which would, among other things, prohibit the NCAA or other athletic associations from punishing schools for assisting in NIL deals. Oklahoma AD Castiglione subsequently released a statement expressing appreciation to lawmakers for “ensuring Oklahoma can remain competitive in the ever-changing world of college athletics. Now, we at OU – as well as universities across the state – can provide even greater guidance and support to our student-athletes as they work to benefit from the use of their [NIL].” On3’s Nakos reports OU is “on track” to launch an organization similar to the 12th Man+ Fund at Texas A&M. CBS’ Dodd notes the ACC’s grant of rights was modeled after that of the Big 12 from its 2012 GOR, which “observer after observer” has referred to as “ironclad.” Dodd: “Big 12 legal minds developed the strategy relying on a landmark 115-year old Supreme Court case that traced its roots back to British Common Law in the 1600s. So ironclad that the Big 12 incorporated itself in Delaware, a state so business-friendly that 65% of Fortune 500 companies file their incorporation papers there. So ironclad that the verbiage in these contracts might have saved both conferences from near-extinction.” Former Big 12 Commissioner Bowlsby tells Dodd: “It was unusual to build a grant of rights around federal copyright law. The thing that was important about that: any disputes would be heard in federal court in Delaware, not in a state court." Dodd: “That’s a huge advantage for a league that might otherwise have to contend with Texas (Big 12) or Florida State (ACC) battling its conference with homefield advantage in a state court. [The Big 12] needed a strategy that found a jet sweep around the 11th Amendment, which includes the concept of state sovereign immunity, and the 115-year-old precedent set in Ex parte Young circumvents state sovereign immunity to allow lawsuits in federal courts for injunctions against state officials if they act against federal law or the U.S. Constitution.” Litigators retained by Bowlsby following the departure of Oklahoma and Texas confirmed as much to Bowlsby: “They came back and said, 'This is ironclad. You can take it any federal court in the country and win.'" More from Dodd. (link)

College football programs are increasingly staffing “NFL-style personnel departments that have turned to data and statistics provided by online analytics companies” in order to more effectively scout the transfer portal. SportSource Analytics Founder Borland tells the AP’s Russo the “big (programs) now are much more proactive with their approach to scouring other teams’ rosters for competitive advantages — or for potentially recruiting them out.” Auburn Director of Player Personnel Mogulla says the Tigers have one staffer whose primary responsibility is to monitor the portal, and Russo notes that “even before the transfer periods start, personnel staffers are tracking news reports and social media chatter looking for clues about which players will be on the move.” USF Director of Player Personnel Levy compares the process to speed dating: “Now it’s even more important to be efficient with your time and not waste more than five minutes on a kid trying to see what he did in college, what position he is; if he’s actually a kid that we should investigate further.” (link)

In the second of a two-part interview with Tech Sideline’s Bitter, Virginia Tech AD Babcock discusses several topics, including upcoming changes to Lane Stadium. Not this year, but in the foreseeable future, Babcock says the Hokies are looking to change the pregame setup. “We’re looking at modeling after the Bevo Boulevard concept at Texas. Granted, they’ve had a running head start on it, but where your gameday street, maybe Beamer Way, becomes more of a festival, things like that. Making the game weekend not just a Saturday game but a Friday event, music, things like that.” Babcock also notes the $6M football locker room renovation is likely to last until the summer of 2024 and will place a “significant emphasis on the hydro areas, the rehabilitation areas, the things that help the players. … No gold-plated waterfalls, but it’ll be representative and sharp.” The Hokies’ Nike contract expires at the end of June, and Babcock would “expect it to be a short-term extension, a two-year extension on that. And see where we are after those two years.” More. (link)

Michigan State AD Haller insists moving the Penn State football game to Ford Field on Black Friday was neither forced on MSU nor was it a unilateral decision. Haller says he consulted a focus group of administrators, donors, season ticket holders and others to get feedback and, after a month of discussions, decided there were more pros than cons: “There were some things that the member institutions within the Big Ten needed to do to accomplish some of the goals of the NBC contract and one of those was the number of night games throughout the year. Michigan State was asked and I think we were asked for a reason. If you look at some of the other schools that were asked to move games or play in prime time, I think this is a really good example of how Michigan State is perceived by the TV partners.” Haller also says the decision wasn’t based on making more money. “No. What I did make sure though is that we didn’t lose money. We will make whatever average revenue for a home Spartan football game. Those things are guaranteed. … What’s important to know is that those that made money off of home football games that were not athletics, like concessions and housing and some of those other entities here on campus, are going to be made whole.” (link)

In examining Washington State’s budget troubles, the Mercury News’ Wilner concludes they appear to be isolated and not portentous of a larger conference problem. “With the Cougars, two things are equally true: 1. They maximize resources as well as any athletic department in the conference. In particular, their success in football (seven consecutive bowl-eligible seasons, excluding 2020) far exceeds what could reasonably be expected given the budget and resources. 2. They are forever on the razor’s edge financially. WSU is reportedly carrying accumulated debt of $75M, much of it resulting from facility projects undertaken years ago. Additionally, the annual operating budget faces a variety of challenges, including the limited number of football ticket sales. (Martin Stadium has a capacity of just 32,952.) … Combine their inherent challenges with the internal accounting mistake and, at this point, the Cougars’ situation appears unique.” (link)

Georgia AD Brooks inks an extension through June 30, 2029. Brooks, who had two years left on his current deal, will earn $1.025M (up from $855K) with $100K bonuses each year. UGA President Morehead says the boost in pay will be closer to what is expected of a Power 5 AD with Brooks’ experience, adding: “He’s down to two years remaining on his current contract and all of his peers in the SEC have longer pending contracts. I thought it was important to show to Josh our collective confidence in his performance and our desire that he remain the athletic director at the University of Georgia for an extended period of time.” (link)

The Athletic’s Williams takes an inside look at former USC AD Bohn’s hiring and tenure, noting the Trojans received positive feedback from Cincinnati administrators, and “Bohn passed a standard background check. But part of the reason an institution uses a search firm is for discretion, which meant there were limitations on how deep the vetting process could go without news of a candidacy leaking. … As a result, there was plenty USC didn’t know.” In fact, 10 days before Bohn departed Cincinnati for USC, a pair of investigations into Bohn’s conduct were started, including one that was the result of a formalized complaint against Bohn made by Bearcats Executive Senior Assoc. AD/AVP for Principal Gifts Hatcher, who alleged “discriminatory and other professional misconduct” against Bohn. Specifically, Hatcher alleges Bohn told her “I’d be careful with diverse pools” when hiring for a development position and remarked to another administrator that Hatcher was “only successful in athletics because she is an African American woman.” On3’s Wittry notes the conclusion of the investigation found that “while the allegations may have constituted evidence of a violation of university policy, there is no opportunity for the Respondent to answer, as he departed before there was an opportunity for OEOA to address the concerns with him.” Lots more. San Diego State’s Power 5 Potential…
+ Aztecs AD Wicker to The Athletic’s Vannini: “People talk about how basketball brought athletics and the campus together more than it had been in the past. Now we’ve continued to make investments in basketball and football where we expect to compete for conference championships and make a Final Four run.” Wicker adds that Snapdragon Stadium has been a benefit to the entire department, not just football, which only strengthens SDSU’s Power 5 case. “It’s generating all kinds of other revenue streams besides a football game day. Conference commissioners can look at that and say we’re making an investment at an institutional level. That’s the type of school we want to be.” (link)
+ Wicker tells On3’s Wittry the decision to join a Power 5 conference, if/when it occurs, will be made on the university level by a relatively small number of stakeholders. “It’s yourself, it’s the president, maybe a key, you know for us, trustee member. Some schools have a much more active board of trustees. Ours, we have a couple key members and there may be an alum or two but it will be a really tight circle.” Wicker also notes that as a new member coming into a conference, you don’t want to be a team that will drag down everyone else’s RPI. “That’s what we really worked hard toward is what are the things we need to do to make ourselves most successful and to have that opportunity down the road? … There’s a number of different things and we’ll weigh all those factors to see at the end of the day what we think gives us the best opportunity to be successful and for whatever conference, if we were to move, how do we help that conference be successful as well.” (link)
+ Extra Points’ Brown reports San Diego State’s Mountain West exit fee of $17M would double, not triple, contrary to reports, should the Aztecs give notice of their departure after July 1. (link)

Ohio State AD Smith has endorsed the Student Athlete Level Playing Field Act introduced yesterday by U.S. Representatives Carey (R-OH) and Landsman (D-OH). The legislation would create a federal clearinghouse overseen by the FTC for all NIL deals over $500. The legislation would also prohibit student-athletes from being designated as employees, ban recruiting inducements and establish the Covered Athletic Organization Commission, which would make recommendations to Congress and be charged with “recognizing credentialed athlete agents.” The commission would consist of ADs, administrators, coaches, former athletes and sports marketing professionals, per On3’s Nakos. Members would be appointed by leaders in the House and Senate. (link)

Tennessee has sold all of its 70,500 football season tickets after experiencing a renewal rate of 96% and selling an additional 9K new season tickets. (link); Vols AD White tells the Knoxville News Sentinel’s Sparks on the entertainment district around Neyland Stadium: “We’re anxious to start having more substantive conversations with the pros who do private development like this. We anticipate that they could likely get a project done faster than we could on our own and probably more efficiently.” Sparks points to inspirations UT is considering: Marriott City Centre Hotel in Toronto, from which Toronto Blue Jays games can be observed, The Battery Atlanta, which sits adjacent to the Atlanta Braves’ Truist Park, Gallagher Way next to Wrigley Field and L.A. Live next to Crypto.com Arena. (link)

UCLA AD Jarmond talks with Sports Illustrated’s Benson about what excites him most regarding the upcoming move to the Big Ten and says the “Big Ten offers exciting new programs, competitive and NIL opportunities on a bigger national stage for our student-athletes to showcase their talent.” Asked what he would change if he could do so with the wave of a magic wand, Jarmond responds: “Social media. I think it’s hard enough for student-athletes to compete in front of hundreds and thousands of fans. Then they have to manage the outside noise of people on social media that judge them, most of the time not knowing them. They’re more than an athlete. I would change social media, less negative and more humanistic, for our students." Full interview. (link)

Hawaii Governor Green confirms the new Aloha Stadium and its surrounding entertainment district will "now be delivered as one integrated public private partnership project." The stadium portion of the project will be "handled through a design-build-operate-maintain contract,” and the selected developer will "utilize a combination of state and private funds to design and construct” the project with tentative plans for it to be ready by the start of the 2028 football season. Extra Points’ Brown reports the Summit League’s patience in replacing outgoing Western Illinois could be indicative of a trend “at the mid and low-major level,” as “many leagues are comfortable being patient and operating with an odd number of schools, as they try to not only better understand the immediate financial realities of what DI sports looks like post-2024, but also if it makes more sense to operate as a larger league with a broader geographic footprint, or to be smaller, but with lower travel and operating costs.” The Summit’s membership decision comes as the league seeks out a new media rights deal, and Brown notes the “industry chatter that I’ve been hearing over the last five weeks or so is that the Summit is seriously considering some non-ESPN options as potential media partners, including potentially FloSports or Midco Sports.” A deal, Brown adds, is expected before the end of 2023. In order to improve its NET ranking and get more teams into the hoops postseason, the Sun Belt is considering establishing scheduling guidelines to increase the number of home games each team plays. While the guidelines are yet to be finalized, league officials believe it “may take penalties and/or incentives to get every school to adhere,” according to Commissioner Gill, who says: “I think everything that we do, if we create some rules, there's probably going to be some penalties associated with them. … We've got basketball strategic planning working groups that are going about their work and trying to identify ways that we can get better at basketball. Non-conference scheduling is certainly a big part of their recommendations, but those things have to work through a process and when they are finalized, certainly we'll let folks know.” James Madison Men’s Basketball HC Byington adds: “We had a scheduling guru come to town and I think our NET ranking as a conference was 13 or 14 last year. I asked him, if we all played seven home games non-conference, what do you think it would do? He’s like it would take you from 13 to 11. Take it a step further, if we all played eight home games like the Mountain West, and win more than 60% of those Division I games, then we’re legitimately talking about getting two teams in or getting a 10 seed.” (link)
