Extra Points purveyor Brown is joined by Horizon League Commissioner Roe Lach to discuss changes proposed by the Transformation Committee, how those proposals become policy, potential broadcast changes and tournament expansion. Roe Lach says it’s “too early to tell” whether the Horizon favors expanding March Madness. “We haven’t dug that deep into it. There’s a lot of questions as to not just the what but the how and, of course, that drives the who. … In particular, the championship recommendations, which many are terrific relative to expanding opportunities and making sure the student-athlete experience is strong for every student-athlete competing. So, what does that mean? Well, there are, we believe, I think across the membership, some untapped revenue opportunities based on when current media rights deals are going to be concluding soon and now we’ll be able to renegotiate or find new revenue opportunities.” Lots more. JohnCanzano.com’s namesake explains that while he does not believe Rice has been eliminated as a possible expansion target for the Pac-12, it’s possible the conference will take just one Texas school (SMU) in the short term before revisiting the Lone Star State at a later date. In the event it does, Canzano believes Rice makes sense. “The academic fit is there and Houston brings 2.45M television households. It doesn’t matter that nobody watches Rice, the market itself is appealing. [...] The cultural and academic pieces are important to the Pac-12. But I’ve been told by more than one member of the CEO Group that the conference will only expand if the additions add media-rights value.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Wilner parses the meaning of last week’s “Robert Robbins 2023 Media Tour,” during which the Arizona president discussed the Pac-12’s media rights negotiations with several media outlets. “Robbins’ overall tone was optimistic: He needed to see the final offer before making a decision on Arizona’s conference affiliation but expressed confidence in the outcome. Given the Pac-12’s message discipline, we should assume Kliavkoff knew ahead of time that Robbins was going public. And we should assume that Robbins was briefed on the latest news from the negotiations — if not the specifics, then at least the general tone and trajectory. … There is no chance — none, zero, zip — that Robbins would go public if the situation appeared bleak behind the scenes.” (link)

Alabama has suspended FB student-athlete Mitchell following his arrest that resulted in drug and weapons charges. According to the police report, Mitchell attempted to evade police while driving 141 MPH. The report also states police found $7K in cash, 226 grams of marijuana and a loaded gun in the vehicle. Crimson Tide HC Saban: "Everybody's got an opportunity to make choices and decisions. There's no such thing as the wrong place at the wrong time. It is what it is, but there is cause and effect when you make choices and decisions that put you in bad situations." (link, link)

Former Dartmouth Alpine Skiing HC Dodge shares his “ideas for some significant changes to keep NCAA skiing moving forward,” which include separating the alpine and cross-country structures, awards and schedules; eliminating the NCAA age eligibility exemption for skiing; and creating A and B divisions in the EISA Alpine Conference. Specifically, Dodge suggests the NCAA should change its framework of recognizing men’s and women’s skiing and instead recognize skiing as co-ed alpine and cross-country, adding: “Currently, equal numbers are allocated for men and women for the championships, 148 spots for men and 148 places for women. However, the allocations between alpine and cross-country are not equal, but they should be. There are 26 NCAA alpine and 26 NCAA cross-country member institutions across NCAA Divisions I, II and III.” More. (link)

A bill proposed in Connecticut would prevent public colleges from working with sponsors to encourage students to gamble. According to the bill’s language, universities could still accept sponsorships from betting companies but could not market gambling directly to students. State Representative Morrin Bello (D-Wethersfield): “After reading the article [on Colorado’s initial partnership with PointsBet], I was really shocked to see that schools are benefiting from this practice. I want to make sure that the universities (in Connecticut) don’t distribute email lists to these companies or the university doesn’t send emails from these companies.” (link)

Asked whether he believes the existing ESPN/ABC and Warner Bros. Discovery media rights deals with the NBA would actually triple in value without streamers like Amazon being involved, former ESPN President/current Meadowlark Media CEO Skipper says: “I don’t think you can get out a spreadsheet and kind of go, ‘Okay I don’t need the NBA anymore’ because somebody else is going to pay an exorbitant number. The people who lost always released statements that said ‘We refused to do a financially irresponsible deal.’ I’m like okay great I hope you continue that practice because then we’ll have all the rights someday. Rights go up. They look terrible in the beginning, by the end they look great. … I think the NBA will get somewhere between 200 and 350% more money in this round of deals than they did last time.” (link)

St. Francis (NY) is eliminating its athletics program at the conclusion of the semester as part of an overall restructuring. SFC will honor the scholarships of student-athletes who wish to stay. The SFC Board of Trustees also granted President Martinez-Saenz’s request for personal leave and has appointed COO Cecere as Acting President. (link); Terriers AD Garcia: “I am heartbroken that a decision has been made to eliminate the college’s athletics program. … The COVID-19 pandemic has left an indelible imprint on St. Francis College and, as a result, Terrier athletics. … Our athletic department has been an outlet of opportunity for student-athletes from every walk of life and from every corner of our globe, and I sincerely hope that will be the legacy of Terrier Athletics. (link); Extra Points’ Brown: “I just texted another AD in their league about this. Was told that ‘we just had our AD call with them last week,’ and that they had no sense this was coming.’” (link)

Utah President Randall was asked whether he agrees with Arizona President Robbins’ prediction that the Pac-12 will ultimately sign a deal on equal footing with the Big 12 or better, Randall replies: “I think we’ve got to get Bobby in those negotiating rooms. I love the optimism. I think we’re all optimistic like Bobby is. We’ve got a lot of value in our conference.” Regarding whether discussions have taken place between the Big 12 and the Four Corners schools, Randall says: “Let me just say that, again, we are in solidarity with our Pac-12 presidents, peers. … That said, we certainly think the Big 12 has put together a great conference. They’re a great set of schools as well, but right now we think staying in solidarity with our Pac-12 schools is the place to be.” Lots more. (link)

The New York Post’s Marchand reports regarding its ongoing media negotiations that the “Pac-12 could turn back to ESPN/ABC, but the deal that was once on the table — the same $31M per year per team that the Big 12 got — is no longer there. If the Pac-12 returns to ESPN, it will likely mean it is willing to take less money in exchange for exposure. At this point, a deal with ESPN is not close.” Also: “Apple is persnickety and takes forever on deals. There is no proof that college sports being exclusively on a streamer would work. And we don’t know for sure exactly where Apple stands in negotiations with the Pac-12. If not Apple, then who?” (link)

MAC Commissioner Steinbrecher talks with the Toledo Blade’s Burwell about a number of topics, including how to make the conference a consistent two-bid league for March Madness, about which he says there is no one-size-fits-all model for scheduling, “so what we want is our top teams, our top three, four, five-plus teams that know they’re going to be battling for that conference title, we want them to build resumes, nonconference resumes, that give them a chance to get that at-large berth if they don’t win the tournament. … We have teams at the bottom of our league who are playing four, five, six, seven-plus Quad 1, Quad 2 games. We need to reverse that, and we’ll continue to hammer it.” (link)

Providence AD Napolillo talks about the departure of MBB HC Cooley, says Georgetown did not reach out to Napolillo until yesterday morning while he was meeting with Cooley, adding: “I don’t believe that anyone could say that this is something you’d want to see in the Big East Conference. I say that as the athletic director, I would say that to Lee Reed at Georgetown, and I just don’t think it’s a good look for the Big East Conference at all. If we were to go out and try to get another coach if Ed were to leave in the Big East, it’s a bad look for everyone involved.” (link, link); Meanwhile, Napolillo has hired Michigan WBB AC Batth as the Friars’ new WBB boss. St. John’s has tapped Iona MBB HC Pitino for the same role, per ESPN’s Wojnarowski and Thamel, who report the former Providence/Kentucky/Louisville HC has agreed to a six-year deal. (link); Former Red Storm HC Anderson will file a lawsuit against the school after being terminated “for cause,” according to ESPN’s Medcalf, who notes Anderson would’ve been owed $11M had he been let go without cause. According to the termination letter obtained by ESPN, Anderson was let go for "failure to create and support an environment that strongly encourages student-athletes who are in the men's basketball program to meet all university academic requirements," "failure to perform your duties and responsibilities in a manner that reflected positively on St. John's University ... in actions [that] brought serious discredit" to the school and "failure to appropriately supervise and communicate with your assistant coaches." Anderson denies the allegations and says the “for cause accusation is wholly without merit and I will be aggressively defending my contractual rights through an arbitration process." (link)

+ The New York Post’s Marchand reports that “ESPN’s latest round of layoffs will have ‘no sacred cows,’ meaning everybody from top on-air people to big-time executives are being scrutinized with the cuts expected to be finalized in the next four-to-six weeks. Despite the “no sacred cows” qualifier, Marchand notes SportsCenter anchor Van Pelt, First Take host Smith and the Monday Night Football booth of Buck and Aikman are considered untouchable. Otherwise, the “most vulnerable on-air folks, according to sources, are the ones that make near or more than seven figures and are not considered needle movers.” Also: “ESPN wants to retain [longtime college football/tennis voice] Fowler, maybe even with a slight raise, as he is its lead college football and Grand Slam tennis voice, but he is not going to receive a large increase to put him anywhere near Buck money.” (link)

U.S. Senator Murphy (D-CT) pens an op-ed for USA Today in which he advocates for universities to pay student-athletes, submitting that while NIL is a step in the right direction, it’s not enough. Murphy also refutes the argument that schools can’t afford to pay student-athletes, citing a 2020 study from the National Bureau of Economic Research, which found that football and basketball players in the Power 5 see less than 7% of the revenue they generate, while most DI institutions “spend more money paying their coaches and building futuristic facilities than they do on scholarships and stipends.” Furthermore, Murphy asserts that “rather than waste millions of dollars lobbying Congress for a solution, the NCAA could start by engaging directly with athletes to work out a revenue-sharing agreement that ensures everyone gets a piece of the pie. … I’ve introduced legislation to make it easier for college athletes to advocate for themselves and collectively bargain with their schools or at the conference level, but let’s be honest: The NCAA doesn’t need Congress’ permission to do the right thing. Our laws already allow for this arrangement.” Full op-ed. (link)

Making the semifinals of the CBI comes with a monetary contribution to a “collective or however they want to sort of channel the NIL distribution,” according to Gazelle Group President Giles. On3’s Wittry reports schools that make it to the semis but lose will be awarded $2,500, the runner-up will receive $10K and the winner will receive $25K. Giles also acknowledges he’s not sure if the money will make a major difference for high-major programs who already have robust NIL infrastructure in place, but “for some of the schools that have lesser NIL monies flowing to their players, utilizing an event to generate funding can make an impact.” (link)

Attorney Winter reports that a bill in Arkansas has been filed that would amend the state’s NIL law by allowing some high school athletes to enter into deals; allowing schools’ supporting foundations to identify, create, facilitate, and negotiate deals for those high school athletes and for college athletes; and giving schools and their foundations a cause of action against any person or entity that uses an NIL deal to induce a current college athlete in Arkansas (or a high school athlete who has signed with an Arkansas school) to enroll at another school. Winter: “This means that if another school’s collective/booster offers an Ark athlete an NIL deal to transfer (or offers a commit a deal to switch his or her commitment), Arkansas and its foundation can sue the other collective or booster. As I said before, this is a very significant bill. It would allow schools in Arkansas and their foundations to act as agents for their athletes and to help them negotiate deals. It would also allow them to basically bring nonprofit NIL collectives in-house.” More from Winter. (link)

In conjunction with the WBB Final Four, AT&T is displaying what it is calling the AT&T Showcase Title IX exhibit inside its Dallas HQ and around the city. SBJ’s Smith observes the exhibit, which was created in collaboration with the NCAA, the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, WBCA and Getty Images, “signifies an increase in the level of sponsor activation that hasn’t always been evident on the women’s side. NCAA Director of Championships and Alliances, Corporate Relations, Marketing and Branding Lucey: “The thing that’s been great about the partnerships has been their consistency. It really comes down to companies that support the mission of the student athletes. This has probably been misunderstood, but our partners have always financially supported the championships, both men’s and women’s. It’s just that we’ve seen a massive increase in additional activation dollars. They see the value and we’re really excited to work with them to create wins for everybody.” (link)

The Denver Gazette’s Briggeman highlights Denver’s success in hosting a first- and second-round pod for the NCAA MBB Tournament, “something that is no given,” as evidenced by the crooked rim that Iowa State complained about in Greensboro. Mountain West Assoc. Commissioner for External Communications Strategy Hedlund: “Nothing like that here. It was seamless.” Briggeman, in fact, attributes much of the regional’s success to the MWC, which served as host of the event. “The conference sent all 21 of its staff members plus an army of roughly 150 volunteers from Air Force, Colorado State, the University of Denver and Wyoming to handle everything from media relations to statistics to assisting school bands with logistics.” (link)

Miami (FL) WBB student-athletes Cavinder and Cavinder have inked an NIL with Caktus AI, joining LSU gymnast Dunne, whose recent deal with the company caused some consternation in the academic community. The partnership was facilitated by Everett Sports Management with Heitner Legal’s namesake assisting on the legal side. More from On3’s Nakos. (link)

Sportico’s McCann posits that banning TikTok, as the Biden administration is currently considering, would negatively impact student-athletes’ NIL endeavors and believes a “ban would almost certainly trigger litigation by the app’s corporate owners centered on First Amendment free speech and Fifth Amendment due process protections, but it could also spur legal action that has athletes and other influencers as plaintiffs.” Ultimately, McCann notes that “as foreign investors—particularly those with close ties to their governments—play more prominent roles in U.S. sports and sports-adjacent industries, expect more pushback on national security, human rights, and other important American interests.” (link)
