JohnCanzano.com’s namesake Q&As with Oregon AD Mullens about a number of topics, including the Ducks’ future with the Pac-12, about which Mullens says: “The Pac-12 has been very good to the University of Oregon. We’ve had tremendous success and our brand has grown in strength over the years by any metric. We’re excited about the future of the Pac-12.” Mullens adds of the ongoing media rights negotiations: “We’ve just got to go get it done.” Football scheduling is becoming increasingly tricky, as Mullens explains the Ducks are beset by rising prices for guarantee games and a geographical location that is expensive to get to. “We also don’t have as many programs in our region that can bus to a game. It’s one of the reasons we play FCS opponents. We get a game that is regional and keep the money in state.” (link)

Conference USA’s spring meetings were highlighted by the “enactment of a comprehensive conference mental health education program, expansion of the student-athlete voice in the governance structure, presentation of new multimedia partnerships increasing membership exposure and consideration of national policy issues which included a session” with NCAA President Baker. Additionally, the membership was updated on the league’s brand refresh, which is set for a July 1 unveiling, and “reviewed conference data elements to inform and enhance competitive achievement in the national landscape, discussed the importance of education around sports wagering… and considered strategic initiatives to best position the membership for continued long term success.” (link)

Alabama Football HC Saban reiterates that he has “no problem” with student-athletes being designated as employees and sharing in the profits. “Unionize it. Make it like the NFL. … I think that’s better than what we have now. What we have now is some schools in some states that are investing a lot more money in terms of managing their roster than others. I think this is going to create a real competitive disadvantage for some in the future." Saban also pointed out the NFL’s emphasis on parity, saying: "If they can have everybody going into the 17th week of the season at 8-8, that would be like a dream for the NFL. Every fan would be watching their team to see if they could get into the playoffs. You think there’s disparity in college football right now? There’s going to be a lot more in the future." That said, Saban distinguished between the NFL and college, noting the “big mistake that people make is college athletics is not a business. People say it’s a business. It’s not a business. It’s revenue producing. … We reinvest every cent that gets made into non-revenue sports. To scholarships, to a lot of things that create a lot of opportunities for a lot of people, which is really, really good. … If we continue down this road, are we going to be able to continue to have those opportunities? I think those are all good questions somebody probably ought to answer." (link)

“We are the NFL right now. We just don’t have (player) contracts,” Auburn Football HC Freeze remarked during the SEC’s Spring Meetings. Missouri HC Drinkwitz added: “Why are we playing around? Why are we acting like [pay-for-play is] not what this is? … My only question is why are we the only sport that considers all other (college) sports in defining how we run our sport? We’re a billion-dollar, 12-team Playoff and we’re considering how that’s going to affect other sports on our campus. Whatever the model is, there’s got to be some sort of establishment of rules, because right now it’s open chaos.” (link)

The Greenville News’ Adams asks several SEC football HCs how they’re addressing sports gambling education within their programs, and Vanderbilt HC Lea says he hasn’t spent much time on that topic specifically but instead focuses on promoting “healthy habits and behaviors.” He adds: “With the recent events here, anytime you're getting that level of evidence, you have to step back and say, what is the message? What is the level of education that we need within our team to ensure that we're making good decisions? We will absolutely need to spend more time and attention on that." Alabama HC Saban notes the biggest challenge is the accessibility and points out it’s important to ensure players grasp the seriousness of violating the NCAA’s gambling policy. “There's people who are gambling and don't even know they're gambling on some of these social media things ... I think you have to be more diligent about how you approach players so that they understand the consequences of even some of the slightest things." Meanwhile, several coaches indicated they would be open to releasing a standardized injury reporting system, though Georgia HC Smart wants to ensure it’s uniform. “If everybody's giving an injury report, that's not a problem.” (link)

U.S. District Judge Rice has dismissed most of former Washington State Football HC Rolovich’s lawsuit against the university, writing in his ruling: “This Court and many others around the country have consistently found COVID-19 vaccine mandates for state employees are facially neutral and generally applicable, and terminating an employee for failing to comply with a vaccine mandate is a permissible employment action.” Rice also found there were “no facts” to support Rolovich’s claim that he was dismissed based on his religious views. Rice dismissed Cougars AD Chun and Governor Inslee from Rolovich’s complaint but allowed three of Rolovich’s seven counts to remain pending. Those counts are against WSU alone and include a claim for breach of contract, which Rice noted requires a "more complete evidentiary record" to determine whether it should be dismissed. Rolovich’s attorney, Fahling: “We will decide whether to appeal the Chun dismissal, but we are pleased with Judge Rice's ruling denying WSU's motion to dismiss.” (link)

SBJ’s Friend profiles JayByrd Films, which has produced viral drone videos for several teams, ranging from the Minnesota Vikings to Olympic skater Kwan to Duke men’s basketball. In the case of the Blue Devils, JayByrd Founder Christensen explains former Men’s Basketball HC Krzyzewski agreed to document his final season with drone footage. “He’d be like, ‘Oh, we should get this shot coming through the front doors and go up to this banner.’ He was telling me, ‘Oh, that’s cool, but why don’t you do it this way?’ Which was incredible.” Friend: “From there, a who’s who of sports teams were all in — from the Yankees to the Avalanche during their Stanley Cup run to the Eagles. This winter with the Marlins, Christensen flew a drone flush into a Sandy Alcantara pitch and straight into Jacob Stallings’ catcher’s mitt. Just last week, he filmed a panoramic Vikings schedule release video.” (link)

The Athletic’s Kaplan reports a “close affiliate” of the NFLPA has been “unable to collect $41.8M of licensing and sponsorship revenue and pay it to the union as of the close of its fiscal year. … The figures appear tied to the collapse of the crypto marketplace, [according to] a person who has been involved in NFLPA dealings and a representative of another sports union who are both familiar with the process, and likely underscore similar issues at other sports unions and leagues.” Per a footnote in the union’s annual report: “As of Feb. 28, 2023, there is uncertainty surrounding collection of certain accounts receivable from OneTeam Partners, LLC. Therefore, an allowance has been recorded as of that date for those amounts.” (link)

“Colorado is performing due diligence to determine whether to return to the conference it once called home,” CBS’ Dodd reports, adding that CU and the Big 12 have “met face-to-face while involved in consistent talks over a period of several months.” Buffs AD George tells Dodd he has no comment beyond what he said last week: “We are proud members of the Pac-12. In a perfect world, we'd love to be in the Pac-12, but we also have to do what is right for Colorado at the end of the day." Dodd adds that “it is expected that Colorado would receive an equal media rights share ($31.7M, beginning in 2025) to join the Big 12, making the move even more attractive.” (link)

The Athletic’s Williams says of USC’s AD search that the Trojans have a “tough needle to thread because you want someone who has experience, has been on that level before, but you also want someone that maybe isn’t an old white guy.” Williams also notes former AD Bohn did not seem like USC, “in California, at this big, prominent university was going to be a good fit for him just from a personality standpoint.” (link)

UCF AD Mohajir says he spoke with Orange County Mayor Demings upon his arrival in 2021 about the possibility of tapping into the Tourism Development Tax and was told there would be opportunities down the road. Mohajir: “I started doing more research on campus and realized we’ve never applied for it. … This was an opportunity that I wanted to pursue. I started doing our research, engaged the whole campus and got [UCF President] Dr. [Alexander} Cartwright’s approval to go for it and we started putting together our case for it.” As part of its pitch, UCF pointed out that the athletics department generates $91M in economic impact annually while attracting approximately 212,858 visitors outside of a 50-mile radius of Orlando and 199,942 room nights. Furthermore, moving to the Big 12 will open the door for new visitors throughout the year. The $176.6M request over 10 years covers two-thirds of the proposed enhancements to the Athletics Village. Perhaps the most underreported source of strife within the SEC is the disparity in state laws as they relate to NIL, specifically as it relates to those which shield their universities from punishment from the NCAA or SEC or other governing body, according to Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger. Mississippi State President Keenum: “You’ve now got fundraisers at a foundation out raising money for the athletic department and they can now add NIL to the list of what they are asking for and doing it through their athletic clubs. What NIL has become is universities going out through their foundations and collectives and raising dollars to give to athletes. They’re just paying them to come play, and there is no limit on that.” One SEC AD says of the collective model: “Let’s be honest, we are all money laundering.” Meanwhile, Commissioner Sankey remarks: “What’s happening at our state level is exactly what I warned about. Our states are making a mess of college athletics.” Georgia President Morehead worries such an approach jeopardizes student-athletes’ eligibility: “If NIL payments come directly or indirectly from the institution, that sounds like an employment relationship.” Lots more. (link)

Sportico’s McCann posits that federal legislation aimed at addressing the myriad issues facing college sports “face several hurdles that might prove insurmountable. For starters, nothing is stopping the NCAA and its members from adopting new rules and enforcement mechanisms to regulate NIL, employment, collectives, agents and related topics. Stated differently, Congress isn’t needed to accomplish what the NCAA wants. … The NCAA and its members are worried about antitrust scrutiny of rules that limit economic opportunities for college athletes. But what the NCAA regards as a worry, others regard as a relief. Antitrust law is designed to ensure that competing businesses, including colleges, compete. But some restrictions on competition might prove reasonable before a court.” In O’Bannon and Alston, the NCAA’s rules were found to have been too rigid, particularly insofar as they set student-athletes’ NIL value at $0 in video games. “More flexible NCAA restrictions would likely satisfy antitrust scrutiny; most antitrust lawsuits fail because courts are usually deferential to restrictions so long as they are not blanket prohibitions. If the NCAA is unwilling to defend new restrictions from antitrust scrutiny, it invites questions about the lawfulness of those restrictions. … The NCAA is no longer in control of college athlete compensation. It will soon discover Congress isn’t in control, either.” More from McCann. (link)

When CU hired Football HC Sanders in December, it included in his contract that the university would guarantee $5M annually for Sanders to use for ACs. (link)
+ Houston will increase its football assistant coach salary pool from $3.05M to $3.525M this fall, per Football Scoop’s Samuels, who reports Cougars DC/AHC Belk remains the highest paid member on staff at $1M annually, and defensive line coach Early is set to make $350K in year two of his contract after making $300K last year. Also from Samuels: “New offensive line coach / run game coordinator Eman Naghavi inked a two-year deal worth $400K annually, while wide receivers coach Daikiel Shorts Jr. agreed to a three-year deal. Shorts is the recipient of a $100K pay bump from $150K in 2022 to $250K in 2023, and is set to earn $275K in 2024 and $300K in the final year of his contract in 2025. The rest of the staff signed new one-year deals.” (link)

Kansas State Baseball HC Hughes has released a statement asserting the DI Baseball Committee and the system “failed our program and our seniors. It was obvious that the committee overemphasized the RPI – a flawed metric. The regional disparities of the RPI are glaring and still were used as a tool to form, shape and make decisions. The most important criteria that has “zero” gray area is head-to-head competition. … We were left out in place of two teams that we finished ahead of in overall conference play and also two teams we beat head-to-head. Why play the games if the records are not valued? When did we stop rewarding winning? It’s inexplicable and disappointing. Our players and our community deserved better.” (link)

The college enrollment rate for recent U.S. high-school graduates aged 16 to 24 declined to 62% last year from 66.2% in 2019, according to the latest Labor Department data, which also shows the rate topped out at 70.1% in 2009. The Wall Street Journal’s Torry notes high-school graduates are being “diverted from college campuses by brighter prospects for blue-collar jobs in a historically strong labor market for less-educated workers. Job growth at restaurants, theme parks and other parts of the leisure and hospitality sector…has increased more than twice as fast as job gains overall in the past year. There also remains a high number of job openings in construction, manufacturing and warehousing, fields that often require additional training, but not college degrees.” Overall, federal data indicates college enrollment has fallen by about 15% in the last decade.
