SBJ’s Michael Smith reports the NCAA has again engaged Endeavor for media rights consultation. Here’s what you need to know: “This round of media rights includes all of the NCAA championships except for men’s basketball and men’s and women’s golf. ESPN has been in possession of those multitude of rights dating back to 2011 when this current 12-year deal was signed. It runs through August 2024, and a new media rights contract would begin with the fall championships. Talks with the incumbent, ESPN, are expected to run through the end of the year. [...] The decision on whether to bundle or unbundle all of the championship rights, such as women’s basketball, will be determined by bids from the media companies. Rather than determine that in advance, the bids from the networks will determine it.” (link)

NC State AD Boo Corrigan refutes the notion that the school flipped its vote to allow for ACC expansion, saying instead the final expansion proposal presented to the Wolfpack was far different than the first one, which the school did not support. Corrigan: “The troubling thing to me was the idea that there was any flipping. To me, a flipping of a vote means here's what it is, you take a lot of pressure and there's a lot of pressure to change your mind.... It was one thing and then it became something completely different. When it became something completely different, the chancellor and I had spent a lot of time talking about it, we voted for expansion.” Corrigan explained this yesterday at the NC State Council on Athletics meeting, its first since the September 1 expansion vote. Extra Points publisher Matt Brown suggests taking a look at a promotion/relegation system outside of football and media rights money, noting that the latter makes such a system in football all but intractable. Instead, Brown examines how Big West, Mountain West and West Coast Conference baseball programs might implement such a system. He notes the average RPI for a Big West program over the last three baseball seasons is roughly 136. For the Mountain West, it’s 140, and for the WCC, it’s 152. If the bottom two Big West schools (ex: Cal State Bakersfield and UC Riverside) moved to the WCC, and the top two WCC programs moved to the Big West, the “new Big West average RPI would be 103. The new WCC would be 189. The average Big West RPI if the league partnered with the MWC instead of the WCC (ex: adding San Jose State and Air Force) would be 108. A shift in 20+ points in average RPI may very well be enough to move from being a one-bid league to a two-bid league, or for the league champion to earn a three-seed (or better) instead of a four-seed in regional play. Softball tells a similar story.” The biggest hurdle to instituting such a system, according to Brown, is ego, as one senior administrator says no program wants to be viewed as being in the “Number 2” league. Difficulty scaling is another issue. Still, Brown asks, it’s “worth at least taking a meeting over, right?” (link)

An update from the Albuquerque Journal’s Ryan Boetel: “... The New Mexico Supreme Court on Wednesday issued an order that lets stand previous decisions that said certain records held by the UNM Foundation and the Lobo Club — nonprofit organizations that raise money for the University of New Mexico and its athletics department — are not exempt from state Inspection of Public Records Act requests.” (link)

Another eyebrow-raiser out of Michigan State as the Spartan Dawgs 4 Life NIL collective has reportedly voided contracts with upwards of 35 football student-athletes. Here’s the rationale, in part, via a statement, “SD4L has made the strategic decision to reduce our advertising budget with select student-athletes in an effort to build a sustainable NIL model for our programs.” However, per On3’s Pete Nakos, “The source indicated to On3 that a driving reason behind the decision to cancel the contracts is a shortage of funds.” (link)

The state of Georgia, via the Georgia High School Association, is poised to allow its student-athletes to profit from their NIL. Key limitations: “If approved, NIL deals cannot be linked to a specific achievement or performance, and athletes won’t be allowed to use their schools’ name, logos or uniforms or other intellectual property. Schools or school representatives may not use NIL deals to entice an athlete to enroll. These changes mirror many of the other alterations that have been made by other high school associations across the country.” (link)

Colorado AD Rick George in a letter to the student body about conduct expectations during football games writes: “We expect all our fans to refrain from vulgar language, verbal or physical abuse, underage drinking, and overall intoxication. This type of conduct will not be tolerated at our home sporting events, and I have instructed our gameday staff and members of law enforcement to enhance their monitoring efforts of our fans’ conduct.” George also asked fans not to rush the field after games, noting that “although ‘rushing the field’ has long been a college football tradition, in recent years, many schools and conferences are cracking down on the practice, as it greatly jeopardizes the safety of players, coaches, staff and other fans. … Unfortunately, after both of our first two home games, we received an inordinate number of complaints regarding fan conduct (especially student conduct), and after both of our home game victories, students and fans ‘rushed the field.’ Such conduct is unacceptable, and I ask you to please refrain from such behavior for any future events.” (link)

Kansas AD Travis Goff in a letter to the fan base encouraged those who are “on the fringe” of going all in on the football team to do so. “There are many great reasons to stay on the sideline but that mentality will not help us reach uncharted heights. We need you. And we need you now to be part of the story that is being written right here at KU. We have sold out four of our past eight home games, and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium has become a very difficult place for our opponents to win. In just a matter of days, we will welcome new member UCF to Lawrence, followed by Oklahoma, Texas Tech and the home finale against Kansas State. We have tickets available, and frankly, we shouldn’t. We should expect advance sellouts. … Looking forward, we will continue to have a choice — will we settle or will we propel our university and program forward? Will each and every one of us do our part to seize the generational opportunity that’s in front of us?” (link)

The NFL has adjusted its gambling policies: Betting on one’s own team will be an automatic two-year suspension. More: “As part of the new rules, the suspension for betting on team facilities or on road trips will be reduced from a mandatory four-game suspension to a two-game suspension. A second violation of that kind will result in a six-game suspension. Meanwhile, a third violation means at least a one year suspension. NFL players are permitted to wager on any other sport besides football — only when they're away from team facilities, however.” (link)

Stanford AD Bernard Muir says scheduling is the big challenge as the Cardinal prepare for the ACC. “We’re working on it daily. We hope to have a lot of the details established this fall. … “This stuff isn’t covered in any AD 101 class, but we’re learning on the fly.” Muir also says the travel component “wasn’t a non-starter” for the Cardinal in regards to the ACC. “First and foremost, we wanted the Pac-12 to stay intact. It had served us well. Then when we realized it was falling apart, it was, ‘OK, what is the appropriate home?’ We had talks with our student-athlete leadership group. They said three things: No. 1 was they wanted to compete at the highest level. No. 2 was what would the travel look like. And No. 3 was ‘Don’t forget about No. 1.’ Once the ACC said yes, that was it.” As for how the department plans to offset the loss in revenue, Muir says: “Campus support is going to increase. We know we can’t compete at the highest level and travel more without additional support. Campus and the board of trustees understand it’s too important to Stanford not to.” He also plans to approach donors, noting their contributions “will be value-adds. We aren’t looking for help with the deficit. We need to invest.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher reports that “multiple Pac-12 sources refute” Washington President Ana Mari Cauce’s claim that the presidents and chancellors didn’t demand a $50M counteroffer to ESPN. Canzano notes he was told that. “One campus president insisted that the conference was worth $50M per school, I’m told. A couple of other board members quickly joined the chorus. Others didn’t have strong feelings either way but followed the herd anyway. Welcome to the world of academia. George Kliavkoff took the fateful counteroffer to ESPN, I’m told. The network ended the negotiations, pivoted to the Big 12 and spent its money there.” Canzano goes on to note that “it was explained to me years ago by one of the Pac-12’s former [CFOs] that we’d never in a million years see the conference board members publicly split on an issue. There were plenty of divisive issues, but it’s not how things work in academia. “Even a 7-5 or a 8-4 vote ends up a 12-0 vote if you know what I mean,” the CFO said. Canzano: “It helps explain the Pac-12’s ridiculous $50M counter offer. Also, why the identity of the board members who strongly supported it still haven’t gone public. They’re still protecting each other, even as they just finished stabbing each other in the backs.” (link)

Colorado football’s quick rise has, quite naturally given industry norms, led to stand-out student-athletes having interest in insurance coverage of the total disability & critical injury varieties, which will be paid by CU. However, policies were not in place when star Buff Travis Hunter was hit late by a Colorado State student-athlete during the matchup in Boulder that left Hunter with a lacerated liver. Sportico’s Daniel Libit & Eben Novy-Williams indicate California-based Paradigm Gilbert is one of the agencies involved in covering a handful of Buffs. As for the timing, CU provided a statement to Sportico: “This is an incredibly important decision for student-athletes and the process can be complicated as they weigh their options.” More: “The Colorado spokesperson, who, on account of educational privacy laws, declined to identify the specific players covered, said as of Thursday the school was paying for two $2 million PTD policies with $250,000 critical riders, and one $5 million PTD policy with a $250,000 CI rider.” Additional details in the lengthy article, including Hunter’s return from injury dynamics. Boston College officially dedicated its revamped Hoag Basketball Pavilion thanks to a $15M lead gift from alum & trustee Mikey Hoag. The donation is the largest in Eagles athletics history. Notably: “The nearly 40,000-square-foot facility features new player locker rooms and lounge areas, a sports medicine center, and a nutrition center on the first floor. Upstairs, the crown jewel of the Hoag Basketball Pavilion is the renovated 10,700-square-foot practice gym, adjacent to the newly created strength & conditioning center and team video rooms.” (link - release, link - video of the new digs)

Bucknell has received a $1.65M gift from an anonymous source to support enhancements to Kinney Natatorium, part of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center. The upgrades include the replacement of two bulkheads, new starting blocks and wedges and the installation of a 17’ x ‘30 video board, among other features. (link)

Alcorn State AD Robert Raines says the $30M renovation to the Whitney Complex may end up being closer to $40M and explains: “We’re in that planning process with the architects making sure that we can fit in these things that are on our wish list. Also, they're looking at possibly adding another 30,000 square feet to that design. Now, as far as when dirt starts moving, that I'm not totally sure, but we are in that process of moving toward that. So I know that the first or second allocation of funding isn't in place. So it will be done in phases. So there is some work that has to be done even to get this moving.” (link)

More facility updates as Lafayette is looking to spend $10M on a new Lacrosse fieldhouse. From Lehigh Valley News: “The 21,900-square-foot facility is set to be called the Wallach Sports Performance and Lacrosse Center after alumni Andrew and Dina Wallach donated a “major gift” to the project in 2021. The F.M. Kirby Foundation is set to contribute $2 million. [...] The new facility would feature offices and locker rooms for the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams and provide more space for multiple teams to do strength and conditioning work.” The Lehigh Valley Planning Commission gave the plans a thumbs up, but the Forks Township Planning Commission still needs to weigh in before work can move forward. The San Antonio Spurs have unveiled the team’s new 500K-sq-ft practice facility at an estimated cost of $510M at the time construction began. While the finishing touches are still being applied, the facility includes practice courts, dining area and a coffee bar, with plans to incorporate an exclusive social club, outside plaza that can accommodate 5K fans and eventually shops, restaurants and possibly hotels. The Infractions Appeals Committee vacated some of the prescribed penalties issued by the Committee on Infractions in the Cal State Northridge men's basketball case. The Infractions Appeals Committee remanded the case to the Committee on Infractions for reassessment of the case classification and the appropriate resulting penalties. From the NCAA: “The Infractions Appeals Committee found that the hearing panel of the Committee on Infractions abused its discretion in the application of an aggravating factor and by failing to apply a mitigating factor. Specifically, the Infractions Appeals Committee overturned the finding that the program intentionally violated NCAA rules, which was considered an aggravating factor in determining penalties. The Infractions Appeals Committee also determined that the school should have earned mitigation for its compliance department's systems, which the Committee on Infractions had not applied in its original decision. As a result, the Infractions Appeals Committee vacated the probation and financial penalties and remanded the case to the hearing panel for reclassification and reassessment of the probation and financial penalties.” (link)
