Lakeland AD April Arvan announces she will step down from the chair, while continuing to serve as SWA/Assoc. Professor of Sport Management and Leadership/Interim Director of Graduate Business Program. The DIII Championships Committee has officially recommended the implementation of the NCAA Power Index (NPI) as the non-AQ selection metric for team championships, starting in 2024-25. The plan is for each sport committee to be able to make adjustments to the “dials” after year one and then during set intervals, at the approval of the Championships Committee. Of note: “As the committee began to evaluate its selection criteria, the NPI was evaluated using six sports and two years of data (2021-22 and 2022-23). The committee found that when set to a default setting (75/25) the NPI produced a championship field very similar to what each sport committee had selected. The evaluation then expanded to include every team sport (except for the team portion of men’s and women’s tennis) with the same two years of data, and as the 2023-24 championships conclude those data were also added for evaluation purposes. In all trials the NPI produced a similar championships field.” The committee also recommended the change of access ratios for team sports (not football) from 1:6.5 to 1:6.0 this fall, which would see Baseball, Field Hockey, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Softball and Men’s Volleyball expand, to the tune of around $772K. Other championship increases include Men’s Golf individual qualifiers, “depending on the number of selected teams so that twosomes are eliminated to improve scheduling efficiency,” Women’s Golf from 31 to a max of 34 teams and Wrestling from 180 to 210 student-athletes plus an additional seventh regional site. Student-athlete per diem was recommended to increase by $10 in FY25 and $5 in each subsequent year through FY28, with host per diem to increase in FY27 for a budget impact of $845K in FY25 and $643K in FY26. Other notable topics of discussion include a survey around web streaming enhancements in earlier rounds and greater quality as “results of the survey would dictate future conversations and potential dollars allocated to support the expanded scope of web streaming,” and resources to use AI to produce student-athlete highlights. Carol Bonner, Associate Registrar for Athletic Certification and Eligibility at Texas Tech, explains her role on campus and how it supports athletics by being housed outside of the department. 

• Manage the process of determining eligibility for student-athletes
• The role is different on every college campus
• Decisions are very objective - no subjectivity

Bonner's office is also responsible for managing the research for the NCAA Graduation Success Rates and Academic Progress Rates at the school. On the models the NCAA ran with membership, Transylvania VP of Athletics/DIII Management Council member Holly Sheilley told D3.ticker/Connect’s Anthony Grassi at the 2024 NCAA Convention the difference using the NPI was on the bubble. “That’s where you only see one or two differences, which is amazing. That’s a check yes to me that this system is going to work for us because again, when you get down to the end of the night and you’re looking at those last three teams, everybody knows you whoever’s arguing best in the room is who gets in and so I think it’ll really help in those regards.” Check out more from that conversation. An Inside Higher Ed survey of 380 college and university presidents found that campus leaders by and large see race relations improving on campus; 83% of respondents rated the state of race relations at their institution campus as good or excellent, up from 78% last year. Another 16% described race relations as fair and just 1% perceived them as poor. Meanwhile, 66% of presidents expressed concern about the decreasing public confidence in higher ed. They cited the top reasons for public skepticism as affordability (36%), concerns about workforce preparation (27%), and perceived ideological bias (16%). And more than half of presidents (57%) believe there is validity to the cost concerns. Despite those worries, 82% indicated they were confident about their institution’s financial stability over the next five years. Even when the timeline was expanded to 10 years, 80% of presidents expressed confidence in their institution's financial health. Another survey question involved how likely respondents were to encourage/discourage their peers from pursuing a campus CEO position, 32% said they were more likely now than in 2020 to discourage talented colleagues from taking the job of president. They identified the greatest pressures on the presidency to be financial constraints (25%); enrollment challenges (20%); too many responsibilities and not enough time (12 percent); external political pressures (9%); personnel challenges and management (7%); and a lack of appetite for the changes they want to make (7%).” Full report.
