Texas AD Chris Del Conte sat down with Spectrum News 1 ahead of the Longhorns’ College Football Playoff matchup with Washington & starts with UT’s across-the-board success this fall: “It’s a testament to our coaches & student-athletes. For the last four or five years we’ve been building up to the idea that potential is a great word, but it’s also a bad word if you don’t live up to your potential. For us, we’re living up to our potential. We talk about that with our kids. We understand what it means to be a Longhorn, it’s not for everybody, but if you understand how to harness that energy, great things will happen.” Del Conte still says the Horns haven’t hit the “tsunami” of success he referenced upon his hire, but “it’s coming. I say that in respect to the University of Texas with our history and our past. We know what it looks like and we’re close, but we’re not there yet.” Lots more, including this on NIL: “We understand what NIL looks like and I get it, but what’s getting lost to me is that only 2% of our kids go pro and yet they’re going to get a free education. Should we at least recognize that it’s not being recognized? My job is to make sure I put the University of Texas, our 600 student-athletes and our coaches in the best position possible to win championships and graduate. If the land shift changes, we will be prepared for that.” (link)

A Catapult spokesperson on the investigation of an alleged security breach with practice film on its platform: “We are aware of the ongoing investigation of the alleged unauthorized access to NCAA football video footage. We have conducted an internal investigation and have not found any security breach in our systems. We have shared this with local authorities that are conducting an investigation.” While no schools are mentioned specifically, the news comes ahead of the Alabama vs. Michigan Rose Bowl slated for Monday. The law enforcement agency investigating the potential breach has not been identified. Players from both schools indicated that their teams have taken safety precautions and not watched film on their individual iPads for several months, but instead do so inside their respective facility, only. The Athletic’s Seth Emerson writes on the backdrop for Florida State’s Orange Bowl appearance against Georgia, as the Seminoles work to climb back to the pinnacle of the sport and push for a new conference affiliation. “There is confidence in Florida State circles about the Big Ten. It would be new territory for that conference, for one, but the Seminoles would, in theory, only be part of the package. Were they to win the grant of rights case it could free up every ACC school. North Carolina would be the biggest fish thanks to its combination of athletic and academic prestige, brand name, and that it would expand the footprint of both the Big Ten and SEC. There could also ensue a high-stakes chicken game: Would the SEC fear being dwarfed by the Big Ten and having its territory encroached, and thus take FSU and another ACC school as a preventive measure? ESPN figures into this too: It’s paying FSU much less per year to be in the ACC, so it doesn’t benefit from Florida State going to the SEC.” (link)

Jones Day has completed its investigation and could not determine whether any Michigan State officials were responsible for leaking the details of Brenda Tracy’s identity in her sexual harassment complaint against former Spartans Football HC Mel Tucker. Of note from USA Today’s Kenny Jacoby: “But investigators said one member of the university's board of trustees wouldn't cooperate with their inquiry and withheld relevant information. They also said a subsequent email in the case was indeed leaked, by someone in a small circle of high-ranking officials.” Tracy’s attorney, Karen Truszkowski, released a statement following the 13-page investigative report’s conclusion: “Ms. Tracy is not surprised that MSU’s internal investigation failed to definitively identify the leak. Clearly there is a leak. We look forward to conducting a thorough, independent investigation to identify the source.” (link)

Memphis Football Head Coach Ryan Silverfield snagged a $75K bonus with yesterday’s Liberty Bowl win, while Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz picked up an extra $25K for beating Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz also points out that by winning the Bobby Dodd Trophy as the national college football coach of the year, Florida State’s Mike Norvell receives a $100K bonus. (link)

Illinois AD Josh Whitman commented on the suspension of Men’s Basketball student-athlete Terrence Shannon Jr. in connection to rape charges: “In moments like this, we have to understand that basketball must take a back seat, and we have an obligation here as a university to take allegations such as these seriously, which we are doing. [...] We take sexual misconduct incredibly seriously. It's antithetical to our mission as a university and athletic department. But we also know there's a presumption of innocence in legal proceedings.” Shannon’s attorney: “Since September, when these allegations surfaced, Terrence has cooperated with law enforcement throughout the investigation, declaring his innocence from the beginning. Now, several months later, my office learned that formal charges were filed against him yesterday in Lawrence, KS. In less than 24 hours, my client responded, and he voluntarily surrendered to local authorities for processing and release. Terrence is innocent of these charges, and he intends to take his case to trial.” (link, link)

247Sports’ national analysts brainstorm on solutions to fix the issue of bowl game opt-outs. Multiple analysts suggest moving the bowl season to the spring as a cap to spring ball or to the beginning of the season in a showcase format. Bud Elliott adds: “Or, in the alternative, eliminate the bowl tie-ins. Allow the bowls to draft the schools who they feel will bring fans and want to play. For instance, Florida State has way more than half of its starters opted out and does not want to play this game. Virginia Tech or Louisville are motivated to play a bowl, based on opt-outs, comments, etc. Teams have a decent feel for who might portal and who might not. (You) have to allow bowls to go outside of the traditional tie-ins if we want good matchups. But it will take a balancing of name value, etc.” Brad Crawford on the financial assurances that could be provided to student-athletes: “Truthfully, TV networks can afford to give back to the players this time of year and that could come in the form of a financial reward for appearing in the postseason. There needs to be some sort of assurance that every participating player gets injury insurance as well. […] Moreover, is there not an obligation, too, on behalf of the players to represent their respective schools if they're under NIL deals? It's time to rework these contracts in a way that the 'season' includes the extra game. Paying the players is necessary to draw more interest outside of the playoff, and one way it could work for both sides — perhaps with advertising space during games or after big plays.” More. (link)

Disney has nearly sold out of advertising inventory for the College Football Playoff semifinals and championship ahead of Monday’s kickoff. VP of Sports Brand Solutions for Disney Advertising Deidra Maddock tells Deadline that 13 of the CFP’s 15 official advertising partners have had a years-long presence, adding: “When brands are making this commitment and knowing that this is a space they want to be in, it’s not a ‘Hey, let’s dip our toe in the water and try it out.’ This is something that they’re investing in. […] “The college football fan base, regardless of where you are in the country, tends to be very passionate and committed. That’s the mystique and the fun of live sports, that ‘any given day’ mentality and who shows up. The degree of competition and the parity of competition across a large swath of schools now is remarkable.” (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini writes on the survival and revival of Conference USA through the membership changes that shifted the league from 14 members down to five and on the path to have 11 by 2025. Commissioner Judy MacLeod formed multiple plans of attack to go on the offensive and, given the nature of the moves, her office whiteboard still holds the same message a staffer wrote in the midst of the chaos, “TRUST NO ONE!!” Of the five remaining schools, the league worked to keep Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky from jumping to the MAC, with WKU AD Todd Stewart noting the Hilltoppers would have jumped if it had another landing spot. Holding strong, those members “were set to receive millions in entrance and exit,” which MTSU is using on a new football building and the buyout for former HC Rick Stockstill. As for the new quartet of schools, New Mexico State AD Mario Moccia: “It was a lifeline. You know that movie Titanic? We got on the door, which was independent football. When Conference USA came around, it was the best thing that could have happened.” Liberty AD Ian McCaw added: “We’d really pursued conference opportunities. We spoke with the American, Sun Belt and CUSA and didn’t have an opportunity with the first two. It was a precarious thing. (CUSA) was down to five members. . . We felt like us stepping forward and committing to Conference USA would stabilize things. It was a constructive step.” Since then, the league locked up a new media rights deal with ESPN and CBS that brings more exposure and revenue for the league by playing midweek games in October, which FB HCs around the league were supportive of from the beginning. The increase in revenue was also tied to the membership signing its first grant of rights, the first for a Group of 5 league. More. (link)

Rutgers President Jonathan Holloway on the direction of NIL ahead of the Scarlet Knights’ Pinstripe Bowl win: “How involved am I in NIL? I'm not that involved in it, frankly. We are in a really tricky moment everywhere in higher education, where there needs to be bright lines between what I'll call name image and likeness as a phenomenon, booster enthusiasm as a phenomenon, corporate enthusiasm as a phenomenon, and the mission of higher education, which is to educate. So there are - we all know there are real lines that need to be kept clear - I'm not saying that correctly. There needs to be bright lines we stay on either side of, and at Rutgers - and I'm sure Miami, but I'll speak just for Rutgers - we're abiding by that very carefully. […] The change is happening so quickly, the possibilities - it's hard to keep track of things, but as a president, my job is to really focus on the academic mission of the university and I hire [people] like Pat [Hobbs] to deal with the kinds of questions you just asked me.” (link)

New Hampshire AD Allison Rich sat down with Extra Points purveyor Matt Brown at the 2023 Women Leaders National Convention to discuss the relevance of her legal background, the ramifications of a student-athlete employment model and more. Rich reiterates the importance of the educational component of the experience, adding: “I would want to make sure the emphasis is on that and really educating Congress and whomever is looking at the laws what does it mean to really be a student-athlete, what does it mean to run an athletics program instead of just the few programs that are seen on TV or that might think that they know about.” On the prospect of revenue-sharing: “We would have to look at what we can afford to do. I don't want to get rid of any sports. My job is providing opportunities for participation, that is number one. When you look at having to change how much you spend on various things and what needs to go into it, we're not getting any more money from the university or from the state. This is all things that we're bringing in, which is a lot of what we operate on now and I just don't know that we have the money to be able to fully fund all of our sports as professional athletes, and that worries me because I don't want to take away any opportunities.” Full conversation on Connect. Ahead of Monday’s Cheez-It Citrus Bowl tilt against Tennessee, Iowa OC Brian Ferentz spoke out about his tenure and impending ouster from his position: “Probably what I resent the most about this situation is that the focus has come off of our football players who have really accomplished some tremendous things this year. It’s gone on to things that just quite simply don’t matter. They’re trivial and silly, in my opinion, and for whatever reason, the focus has gone there, instead of on a bunch of players who have worked really hard, overcome a lot of adversity and dealt with a lot of nonsense to win 10 football games and put themselves in position to win the 11th. Quite frankly, I think that’s where the focus should be. That’s where I’d like it to be.” (link)

George Washington rolls out plans to convert the Charles E. Smith Center pool into a new Men’s and Women’s Basketball practice facility, pending approval from the D.C. Zoning Commissioner. The Revolutionaries plan to fill in the natatorium by August 2025 and move aquatic programs to off-campus facilities. The project will, as the Washington Business Journal’s Michael Neibauer writes, bring “an end to the existing game of musical chairs across the Foggy Bottom campus that takes place during conflicting events.” (link)

The inaugural Pop Tarts Bowl, in all its edible glory, generated $12.1M in media exposure for the frosted strawberry pastry’s parent company Kellanova, compared to the $2.06M in total sponsorship income the bowl generated from all sponsorships in 2021. (link)

Head of Condiments Products for Duke’s Mayo parent company, Sauer Brands, Joe Tuza chatted with the Charlotte Business Journal’s Erik Spanberg about the brand’s growth four years into its bowl game sponsorship that now runs through September 2028. Wednesday’s bowl game led to record website visits and product sales for the brand thanks to the objectives to create more brand interest, promote new mayo flavors and other Duke’s condiments and more. The content twist for this season was a combine six participants went through to win the honors of being this year’s mayo dumper. Tuza: “For us, it’s about how do we make it fresh. We still are playing off the fact that we hit poor coach Beamer in the head in the first mayo dump. This year, we did something a little different, where we put six contestants through a combine — it created more content for us.” (link)
