The Worldwide Leader: 

+ Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy pens that if Apple wants to be a force in live sports then it should buy ESPN and in so doing, Apple would get rights to the NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLB, NHL, UFC, the PGA Tour, tennis Grand Slams, Formula 1, many NCAA championships and college football’s Big 12 and Southeastern Conferences — plus ESPN’s first two Super Bowls after the 2026 and 2030 seasons. Notable author James Andrew Miller says Apple wouldn’t even need to buy 100% of ESPN for it to be a “game-changer… Apple has enough change in their couch cushions to fundamentally alter the media rights landscape.” McCarthy points out that “Even with ESPN’s economic model under pressure from cord-cutting, it’s uncertain whether [Disney CEO Bob] Iger would want to turn off that revenue spigot. Since ESPN will air its Super Bowls and the NBA Finals on ABC, its sister broadcast network would likely have to be included in a deal.” More analysis. (link)

+ Could Verizon be the strategic partner ESPN is looking for? The Information’s Sahil Patel reports Verizon has initiated a conversation with the Worldwide Leader. A bit further, “Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg has made no secret of his openness to such an arrangement [and his] interest in partnering with Disney on the distribution of a streaming version of ESPN earlier this summer.” Verizon currently has 92.5M wireless subscribers. Hampden-Sydney Football HC Marty Favret will retire at the end of this season after nearly a quarter century at the helm. President Larry Stimpet: “There’s a saying, ‘the people make the place’ and nowhere is this more true than at a small college. Not only is Marty Favret the winningest football coach in the history of Hampden-Sydney athletics, but he has, for 23 years, helped the college fulfill its mission to form good men and good citizens by coaching and mentoring thousands of the college’s student-athletes.” (link)

+ La Verne receives a $15M grant from AltaMed towards its new College of Health and Community Well-Being project that will cost around $44M. (link)

+ SUNY Potsdam will phase out four academic programs as it faces a $9M deficit. (link)

+ Inside Higher Ed’s Katherine Knott details how regulatory changes from the Department of Education are making college mergers more complicated with lawyers noting a department review now takes six to 18 months when it used to take 45 to 60 days. One major change is the point at which the department begins its process, where it now only reviews a merger once it has been signed off on by an accreditor. Another concern for practitioners is the proposed moves around financial responsibility, which, if approved, would require a buyer institution to post a 10% letter of credit should the selling institution not have the financial resources to operate. Thompson Coburn Partner Aaron Lacey: “The department has just added a disincentive into the mix, and they’re saying, ‘Well, the school is distressed that you’re thinking about helping out—you’re gonna have to also post a 10 percent letter of credit or something else that the secretary decides.’ […] It means students are less likely to re-enroll and finish any program. It also means that all those employees lose their jobs, potentially. It’s not a good outcome.” (link)

Rainfall totals in Los Angeles from Tropical Storm Hilary reached as high as 6.46 inches in some places. Downtown Los Angeles on Sunday received 2.99 inches of rain, shattering its previous record of 0.03 inches. LAX, meanwhile, got 2.54 inches and Long Beach Airport reported 2.62 inches, compared with their previous records of “a trace” of rain. Widespread flood warnings continue throughout the area. The first tropical storm to hit the area in 84 years, HIlary made landfall the same day a 5.1-magnitude earthquake shook the area yesterday. So far, no significant injuries have been reported due to the storm. (link, link)
