“It’s likely they are leaving early.” That’s an unnamed source with knowledge of ongoing discussions between Oklahoma, Texas and the SEC to The Athletics’ Mandel, Olson and others as rumors swirl about the timing of the Sooner and Longhorn departure from the Big 12. According to a Big 12 official, a delay in releasing the league’s 2023 FB schedule is in part due to the uncertainty, with sources believing a resolution will occur in a matter of weeks. The timing of the move makes sense, posits Mandel and Olson, with the SEC + ESPN deal kicking off in the 2024 season along with an expanded College Football Playoff. Additionally, an SEC expansion to 16 teams would align with the Big Ten’s addition of UCLA and USC. Hurdles remaining: negotiating a reduced buyout, with the remaining Big 12 schools expecting OU and UT to pay a “high enough exit fee to make the remaining members and their network partners whole.” Mandel and Olson: “A noteworthy landmark is fast approaching. Per Big 12 bylaws, a member must give at least an 18-month notice of its departure date. That letter would have to arrive by Dec. 31 if they intend to join the SEC on July 1, 2024.” (link)

The Bangor Daily News’ Mahoney pens on the challenges facing new Maine AD Killy, starting with the positive: $90M from the Harold Alfond Foundation. Challenges include increasing compensation for HCs who are some of the lowest in the league, elevating Men's Ice Hockey and MBB and upgrading facilities. On the facilities front, Mahoney points to an expected new Softball field, needed upgrades to Memorial Gym and Alfond Arena and Soccer and Field Hockey facility updates to be done next fall as keys. Mahoney: “When Killy arrives in Orono, it is of the utmost importance that the administration allow him to do his job and support him. Having highly successful athletic programs and quality facilities generate positive exposure for the university, and for the state. And better teams attract larger crowds to the games, which means more revenue. Enrollment at UMaine is down and continues in a downward spiral, and this year’s incoming class was one of the smallest in years. Good athletic teams will make more kids want to attend UMaine. And it makes it much easier on UMaine’s fundraisers if the donors are anxious to give money because of the positive exposure created by strong athletic teams.” (link)

+ Sports Illustrated’s Forde: “For now, let’s grant Baker the benefit of the doubt and assume he will have some legitimate influence and stature. If that’s the case, four of the six most powerful people in college athletics will have arrived within the past three years—and from completely outside the space. … Now, the NCAA is going straight politician. The last career campus administrators in the group are Southeastern Conference commissioner Greg Sankey and Atlantic Coast Conference commish Jim Phillips. The pivot away from that profile, which had proliferated for decades, indicates how badly the previous generation screwed things up by being stubborn, tone deaf, greedy and myopic. It also indicates the shifting needs of the constituents. The conferences want deal-makers who can market them to media companies for the highest possible dollar. The NCAA wants someone who can convince politicians to produce legislation that keeps the association viable and out of its current barrage of lawsuits.” (link)

+ The Athletic’s Staples: “If you are relying on the federal government to produce the framework of the rules your business will run by, you’re not doing it right, but that’s what they think they have to do instead of just actually figuring out a solution on their own. … It’s clear what they want to do is have a voice in Washington D.C. and do this politically, instead of just coming up with common sense solutions for how to get their arms around this. It doesn’t mean it is impossible to figure this stuff out, but just thinking ‘Oh we’ll hire a politician and he’ll get Congress to save us,’ it’s not smart.” (link)

NCAA Noteables…

+ The DI Committee on Infractions found former Cal State Northridge MBB HC Gottfried and a pair of former ACs had impermissible contact with and provided impermissible benefits to prospective student-athletes during the COVID recruiting dead period. The Infractions panel noting: “This case involved intentional violations by coaches with decades of experience. The violations also occurred during the COVID-19 recruiting dead period, meaning that the coaches' actions endangered the health and safety of a number of individuals while, simultaneously, gaining a recruiting advantage over compliant (schools).” Penalties include a three-year show-cause for Gottfried and a 40% suspension from his first season at another school, two-year show-causes for the ACs, three years probation for CSUN, self-imposed one-week prohibitions of unofficial visits and recruiting communications and a $5K fine plus 1% of the MBB budget. + The NCAA has approved a one-time blanket waiver for FBS bowl games to be exempt from the four-game limit for participation to count as a season of competition, per ESPN’s Cubelic. (link)

Penn State AD Kraft covers an array of topics during the Rose Bowl’s media day, including the future of Beaver Stadium, about which he noted there have been 19 studies done over the past 10 years. With that information in hand, Kraft says he is confident he will soon have a recommendation for President Bendapudi and the PSU Board of Trustees. “I want to make this building better, and we have to do that. We’re very close. All the data is there now.” Kraft also notes that constructing a new stadium is not feasible financially and that a part of Penn State’s identity is having a stadium with over 100K fans. Asked whether the Nittany Lions are in a position to extend MBB HC Shrewsberry’s contract, Kraft says “yes” but stated that keeping Shrewsberry isn’t just about paying him— it’s also about keeping the staff around him and giving the team the resources to be successful. “That infrastructure, which I think has lacked for a lot of our sports, is where I think we have to invest in now. … Paying the coaches is great. But the great coaches understand that it’s all the other stuff that helps you eventually win a national championship.” More from Kraft. (link, link)

Georgia Tech AD Batt announces GT has surpassed its $5M goal for the Competitive Drive Initiative from a combined $2.5M in gifts and a $2.5M match from the GT Foundation and will subsequently up the goal for donations to $3.5M through the end of the year. (link)

Sports Illustrated's Johnson details what an HC search looks like from an AD’s perspective and notes that search firms can serve a number of purposes. “Sometimes it can just be for the logistics of setting up interviews to keep the process extremely close to the vest. Some other commonly cited reasons to hire a search firm have to do with plausible deniability, confidentiality and to cover your bases on a background check.” Anachel CEO Cecil tells Johnson HCs “are de facto CEOs. Good athletic directors and even general managers understand the importance of having a coach who understands, and is prepared to be that public-facing CEO. It is more than the X’s and O’s. The X’s and O’s are why they’re in the room, however, staying in the room can be impacted overnight by a reputational fumble of their public persona. Progressive ADs or GMs want to do everything that they can to make sure that that their football CEO is not only representing their billion-dollar business but their constituents, which are thousands of student-athletes, [players], alumni, donors, boosters, legislators, and supporters who where their logo across the globe. Nola.com’s Duncan looks behind the scenes at the effort to keep Tulane FB HC Fritz with the Green Wave despite an offer from Georgia Tech, pointing to the transfer portal and NIL as two key pieces of the puzzle. With an eye on the portal opening, the Yellow Jackets wanted to announce the hire immediately, while Fritz hoped to wait until after the AAC Championship game; at the same time, alignment between Fritz and AD Dannen on resources such as facility upgrades and promoting the program’s Fear the Wave NIL collective, as well as a reworked contract, helped seal the deal for Fritz to stay in put in ‘Nola. Dannen: "If this was a financially based decision, he would have left. This was about his commitment to his team, his commitment to the program, the ability to have success here, the willingness and ability of our institution to commit to that success. As bowl season kicked off today, USA Today’s Schrotenboer writes on the compensation trends for bowl game executives, in which five of the 18 CEOs USA Today tracks seeing pay jump from 2019 to 2020 and four seeing cuts of at least 12%, with 13 or more bowl organizations applying for federal payroll relief. Leading in 2020 compensation was retired Gator Bowl President/CEO Catlett at $1.29M due “a retirement sendoff after 29 years, which included a life insurance policy with a cash surrender value of $1 million and a Toyota van worth $52,000,” followed by Cotton Bowl CEO Baker whose base pay increased from $611K to $875K while his bonus pay fell from $385K to $77K from 2019 to ‘20. Sun Bowl Executive Director Olivas whose pay increased from $195K to $208K: “It looks bad, but I’ve never asked for a raise. They gave me a car allowance, because my original contract allowed for that, and I hadn’t gotten one. We do more than a football game. It wasn’t football money given to me. We have a basketball tournament, flag football tournament. We have all kinds of events.” Compensation table included. (link)

Section 533 of the National Defense Authorization Act includes a change in policy that could prevent athletes at service academies from delaying their active service obligation to play professional sports directly out of school. The obligation currently includes five years of active duty and three years of individual ready reserve. Section 533 specifically states: "The cadet may not obtain employment, including as a professional athlete, until after completing the cadet's commissioned service obligation." The change is expected to go into effect when the bill is signed by President Biden, which could be as early as next week. (link)

During today’s Michigan State Board of Trustees meeting, Trustee Foster commented that there is “not a viable path” to reinstate Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving. "Most prohibitively, without sufficient existing fundraising, there is not a path to build a new competition pool without assessing a fee to the entire student body, something we do not wish to do. We appreciate the advocacy those supporting the swim and dive program have shown. While we know this is not the answer supporters are seeking, we feel we owe an honest, transparent and definitive statement on the issue." MSU is currently building a new $154M rec center with a competition swimming pool, but student fees will fund the center. (link)

Penn Sports has been fined $250K by the Ohio Casino Control Commission following Barstool Sports’ Barstool Tailgate Show appearance at Toledo that pushed students and attendees to pre-register for the Barstool Sportsbook with sports betting set to go live January 1. (link)
