MLive’s Matthew Miller profiles how private institutions in Michigan are using a bevy of sports programs to stay viable amidst decreasing enrollment and increased financial pressures. Most of the NAIA members in Michigan have student-athlete populations that account for between 40% to 56% of overall student enrollment, with Michigan-Dearborn and Concordia (MI) outliers at 5.5% and 73.6% respectively. Since 2003, the percentage of undergrads competing as student-athletes has grown by an average of 323%, with Cleary showing the largest increase from 4.9% of undergraduate athletes in 2003 to 56.9% in ‘21. Michigan Independent Colleges and Universities President Robert LeFerve: “We haven’t gotten close to the bottom of the well of students that want to continue their sports journey in college and won’t be playing Division I. […] It turns out these programs are relatively inexpensive to run, because you’re not paying $5 million for a head football coach or $95 million. You don’t have billion-dollar sports facilities. You’re really doing things on a relatively shoestring budget, so the enrollment gains you get do translate directly into money for the classroom.” (link); Spring Arbor AD Jason Crist on the same topic: “I’ve been here 24 years, so I started back around 2000 and have seen it grow from under 200 athletes to our number this year is 423 athletes. So, we have doubled since the time I’ve been here. […]  When you come to a soccer game, it feels like you’re at a Big 10 soccer game because the facility is nice and there’s a lot of student support and it’s loud but you’re on a small campus where people know you and love you.” (link)

U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) have introduced the Stop Campus Hazing Act, which would require colleges and universities to educate students about the dangers of hazing and give parents and students more information about which on-campus student organizations have a history of hazing incidents. Higher ed institutions also would have to list hazing incidents in their annual crime reports. Klobuchar: “When parents send their kids away to college, they expect they will get a good education and make new friends. Unfortunately, hazing is a dangerous – and at times deadly – reality, and we must work to end it. Our bipartisan legislation will improve hazing prevention efforts on college campuses as well as reporting of hazing incidents to make sure we have the information we need to stop this abuse and keep students safe.” Similar legislation has been introduced in the House.
