AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco will retire at the end of the academic year after serving as the league's only commissioner. Aresco: “It has been the supreme privilege of my long career in sports to have had the opportunity to lead this great conference from its reinvention in 2013, and to represent its outstanding student-athletes, coaches and administrators. I am grateful to the Board of Directors for giving me this opportunity to serve. It would take many pages to list this conference’s numerous athletic and academic accomplishments. There have also been some disappointments and difficulties along the way, most notably, the P5-G5 divide, realignment, College Football Playoff access for our deserving teams, and some competitive heartbreak in big games. But these have not affected in any way my enthusiasm in leading this terrific and resilient conference or my optimism for its long-term future.” (link)

South Carolina State taps Walsh (DII) AD Nathan Cochran for its AD post. The Bulldogs have also named Benedict (DII) Football HC Chennis Berry as the school’s next Football HC. SCSU President Alexander Conyers: “I’m confident we have hired two great additions to the team. I look forward to working with each of them.” (link, link)

Headlining attorneys Steve Berman and Jeff Kessler have filed a new lawsuit against the NCAA on behalf of Duke football student-athlete DeWayne Carter, Stanford women's soccer student-athlete Nya Harrison and TCU women's basketball student-athlete Sedona Prince. Per the complaint, the plaintiffs are seeking an injunction that would end the NCAA’s rules prohibiting schools from compensating athletes “for their athletic services.” They’re also seeking "substantial damages” for FBS football players and DI men’s basketball and women’s basketball players at Power 5 schools between Dec. 7, 2019, and whenever the date of judgment in this case occurs. From the suit: “These draconian, collusive rules prohibit what the NCAA refers to as ‘pay-for-play,’ but what anyone else would call market-value compensation. In college sports, only the athletes are treated as ‘amateurs.’ Everyone else involved enjoys the compensation that results from unrestrained competition for the athletes’ services.” USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz also notes the complaint “cites NCAA President Charlie Baker's new proposals concerning athlete compensation, and his comments about them yesterday. It alleges that ‘any continued claim’ that amateurism is a justification for prohibiting schools from paying athletes ‘is now factually bankrupt.’” (link, link); Full complaint. (link)
|
Also from Berkowitz: “Seven state attorneys general (West Virginia, Colorado, Ohio, Illinois, New York, North Carolina and Tennessee) have filed suit against the NCAA over its athlete-transfer rules. Case was filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia. The case prominently features Mountaineers men's basketball player RaeQuan Battle, whose efforts to get a waiver that would allow him to play for West Virginia immediately this season after making a second transfer, have been rejected by the NCAA.” (link); West Virginia AG Patrick Morrisey: “The complaint alleges the NCAA restrains athletes from marketing their labor and is in violation of the Sherman Act. In our complaint, we discuss the arbitrary and inappropriate way the NCAA has treated RaeQuan Battle and other athletes. Every athlete must be treated fairly and no organization is above the law. I’m pleased to join this bipartisan effort and believe the law is on our side. It’s time for change to come to the NCAA. In a separate filing, we are asking the Court for a temporary restraining order against the NCAA to bar them from enforcing their transfer rule.” (link)

Reactions from around the industry continue coming in regarding NCAA President Charlie Baker’s proposed new framework, with several wondering where the money is going to come from, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. One AD asks: “Does he know something we don’t? If not, we are going to get sued again.” Dellenger subsequently notes: “To be sure, the congressional wheels are turning. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) and their staffs are making progress on federal legislation, U.S. Senate aides tell Yahoo Sports. There seems to be a compromise on at least one important subject: addressing employment. Discussion continues on granting the association at least a narrow legal protection. Meanwhile, USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports groups representing FCS schools have hired a consulting firm to help figure out where they fit into this new model. Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly asks: “What is doing (what Baker is proposing) going to do to schools in the Big West or the Coastal Athletic Conference or the (Atlantic 10)? What happens to them? And, really, what happens to two, three to five of the conferences in the Group of Five?” As this all plays out, Baker’s message, per Dellenger, is for everyone to take a deep breath. The proposal, Baker explains, is “what we call a place to start.” More. (link, link)

Army West Point has secured the $170M in private funding necessary to break ground on the Michie Stadium Preservation Project in the spring. The project includes extending the Corps of Cadets seating section from end zone to end zone, adding premium seating and offering improved concessions. In addition, the surrounding landscape will be reconfigured to improve accessibility while capitalizing on the panoramic views of Lusk Reservoir, the Cadet Chapel, Fort Putnam, and the scenic Hudson Valley. Black Knights AD Mike Buddie: “It is a remarkable testament to the generosity and loyalty of the West Point community that we were able to raise $170M in funding. This aspirational project more than tripled the scope of the next closest gift-funded project in the Academy’s history. To have secured two individual lead commitments of more than $20 million and several commitments of more than $5 million is humbling and overwhelming and speaks to the impact of the West Point experience. This project will support the entire Corps of Cadets and our fans, not just football and lacrosse cadet-athletes.” The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2026. (link)

BYU AD Tom Holmoe acknowledges there are Cougar fans not in favor of Utah’s joining the Big 12 but says he is. “I think some fans on both sides make it very difficult, and I think that is what some people are worried about, is those fans, not the games. My responsibility is not for those outlier fans. It is for the people that are playing in the games who love the games. They are competitive and it is as fun of a game to play in as you can imagine.” On being an AD during these tumultuous times: “I could say, ‘Wow, this is hard. Woe is me.’ And we wouldn’t get any better. We would just kinda be stuck. For me, I haven’t seen any of these things (happening) in advance any more than anybody else. We are all in the same boat.” Full Q&A. (link)

Florida State has parted ways with Childers Construction, the firm that was handling the Seminoles’ new $138M standalone football facility project. From FSU: “Seminole Boosters is taking necessary steps to advance the project forward on schedule and within budget. The process has already started to select a new construction manager to complete the project, and we anticipate an announcement by the end of the month.” According to Warchant’s Ira Schoffel, FSU and Childers could not come to an agreement on a guaranteed maximum price for the facility’s construction. Plans to free up PNC Arena’s north-side loading docks into new offices for the Carolina Hurricanes have been changed after the initial cost was estimated to be between $45M and $65M. CAA/ICON Co-CEO Marc Farha: “We’ve heard from both Gale Force and N.C. State, and they didn’t believe that made sense from a financial standpoint.” He adds the initial planning and programming phase would likely take another four to five months, which would put the renovations “right on the edge of the timeline” proposed in August, which was to begin construction in 2024, according to the News & Observer’s Luke DeCock. U.S. Soccer has selected a 200-acre site in Fayetteville, Georgia, for its new $200M+ National Training Center. The site is located about 25 miles south of downtown Atlanta and 15 miles from the city’s airport. All 27 of U.S. Soccer’s national teams will utilize the facility, which will also serve as the federation’s business headquarters. Coca-Cola will be a founding partner of the facility, which has also received $50M in support from Home Depot Founder/Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank. (link)

Oregon State may have used an ineligible player in the College Cup quarterfinals. JohnCanzano.com’s namesake reports Beavers student-athlete Javier Armas received his eighth yellow card (11/25 v. SMU) and should have sat out quarterfinal. Canzano adds: “Armas and head coach Greg Dalby facing suspension for this weekend. Team trying to provide extenuating information to NCAA Rules Committee. Appears to be an administrative oversight at this point. The only way OSU can avoid a penalty is by establishing that one of the yellow cards was charged to the wrong player. But this is usually done within 48 hours of the game. Rules Committee has final say, and has upheld the rulebook penalty in two other situations already this year.” (link)

As part of its new media rights agreement with NBC, Notre Dame will feature in a new Hard Knocks-style series on Peacock each season. Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer notes the Fighting Irish will also have their own channel on the streamer. Speaking at this week’s SBJ IAF, Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick commented on the media rights deal itself and acknowledged the network’s partnership with the Big Ten “was an important part of our decision. … We were on a bit of an island.” The Irish also have no plans to join a league for football anytime soon, per Swarbrick, who explained: “We don’t do it because it’s financially advantageous or competitively advantageous, we do it because of the value to the university. … I think my successor has the same view as I do. If he has a career comparable to mine, it’ll be at least that long [that ND remains independent].” (link)
