New Mexico Highlands AD Ehling has resigned, per the Las Vegas Optic's Myers. NMHU President Minner, whose contract runs through the 2023-24 academic year, told Myers: “I have a couple of months left on my contract here, so my strategy right now is to go with an interim. I might even consider going with a co-interim, I haven’t decided that yet, then allow the new president to do the search and make the selection that she or he wants to make, I’m going to allow that person the opportunity. ... They need to keep the train running and keep moving ahead, I’m not necessarily looking for major innovations from the interim folks. We need good management and we need to keep supporting our athletic program, but other big changes no, I am not anticipating or expecting that until we get a new permanent person in there.” (link)

The newest alliance in college athletics is the Power Four, the CIAA, SIAC, MEAC (DI) and SWAC (DI), which was launched late last year. The commissioners of the Power Four meet monthly to collaborate on considerations for future legislation, funding and corporate dollars, third-party promoters and more. CIAA Commissioner McWilliams Parker: “I think we’re for power. That’s what we stand for. To empower our students, our HBCU institutions, to advocate, to live our best lives in the communities that we serve and give these student athletes an opportunity to play at HBCUs. And it’s not for everyone. We get that as well. But for us, it’s what I do every single day. It’s passion work.” SIAC boss Hollman states: “Our real opportunity is to align ourselves with the common values of our membership. We are not in competition with each other.” Sports Illustrated’s Johnson adds: “The SIAC and CIAA have considered following the lead of the FCS conferences with a potential basketball challenge and a Week 0 football game pitting the reigning champions of each conference. And other work regarding football schedules involves making sure there’s a price floor for lucrative out-of-conference games so one school doesn’t undercut another.” More. (link)

Western New Mexico promotes FB AC Hickman to HC. AD Noble: “We are very fortunate to have found our new head football coach already on our staff. Coach Hickman has been our offensive coordinator these last two years and provides continuity and consistency in our offensive scheme. [...] His leadership, at this critical time, will certainly solidify our 2023 recruiting class and provide stability within our current roster.” (link)

Florida’s new NIL bill, which has among its language a removal of the “so-called cause compensation language that will allow for schools to more directly facilitate deals,” per Sports Illustrated’s Johnson, has cleared its final hurdle and will now be sent to the desk of Governor DeSantis for his signature. Florida Representative LaMarca (R-93) says the bill is a “priority of this current leadership in the House and Senate and it’s definitely a priority of our governor. I think when we’re all on the same page on something it’s clear that we can get things done. It’s important the date and the timing means that Florida will remain competitive. That’s why we wanted to get it off the agenda now and move on to other business after this.” (link)

With three more regional training sessions for the DII Make Game Day Yours initiative this year, online modules have been made available for member institutions and conferences. SAC Asst. Commissioner for Compliance and Internal Operations/SWA Sanger: “The Make Game Day Yours initiative provides conferences and campuses not only some much-needed resources for training staff but also sets a standard of excellence for us to strive for. While we may not be able to execute events exactly as Disney does, with the information provided, both conferences and institutions alike can utilize key components to enhance their game day experiences.” (link)

More experts, more differing opinions on whether the U.S. is headed toward a recession. Barclays Global Chair of Research Rajadhyaksha tells the New York Times: [The Fed] should be worried about how strong the U.S. labor market is. So far, the U.S. economy has proved unexpectedly resilient.” However, ADP Chief Economist Richardson says: “I don’t think we’re re-accelerating. You can have a strong labor market and slow economic growth.” But then Renaissance Macro Head of U.S. Economics Dutta tells the NYT that the re-acceleration signs are “undeniable,” adding that as a result inflation rates could get stuck at unusually high levels. “They’ve been raising rates for a while. All they have to show for it is an unemployment rate at 3.4%.” Inflation Insights Founder Sharif adds: “The concern is now you shift to a situation where that downward pressure goes away. Wages are still supportive of people buying more stuff.” Well, that clears that up. (link)
