The Baltimore Sun’s Taylor Lyons joins D1.ticker’s Kristen Eargle to discuss Maryland’s AD opening and suggests that the biggest risk the Terps face is “that they kind of just become irrelevant in this new Big Ten landscape. I think football, unfortunately, is already trending that way. In men's basketball, like I said, it is their best path to winning a national championship, I believe, at least in the revenue sports. So, the biggest risk there is becoming irrelevant in those two sports in the Big Ten and just having Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State continue to exceed you in football, but then also maybe them and some of the other schools start to pass you in basketball, too.” On the other hand, Lyons believes Maryland has the potential to be “one of the most successful athletic departments in the Big Ten if everything’s run well. Look at football like I was just saying, they haven't been relevant over the past five, six years in the Big Ten, but I think they have all the capabilities to get there. You look at the recruiting footprint in the DMV, the Baltimore, the D.C. market is huge money-wise, so I think they have an opportunity to be relevant in football. And then basketball…that’s their best path in competing for championships and you can do that in the Big Ten. Kevin Willard just showed Maryland is not far removed from having a nationally relevant men's basketball program. The future could be bright in Maryland. It’s just going to take that right person to steer the ship.” (link); The D1.dossier for the opening is available, for those looking to win the job. (link)

Ohio AD Julie Cromer sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to reflect on developing culture and embarking on the university’s first Football HC search in 20 years. The search, which led to the hire of an internal candidate, provided Cromer and the Bobcats an opportunity to engage stakeholders in arenas such as NIL, season ticket sales and annual giving and incorporate student-athletes in the process of defining the program’s cultural priorities. Cromer also offers insight and reflection on the work of the Transformation Committee, including some of the issues that were left on the “cutting room floor.” Cromer: “Sometimes you have to take issues as they’re ready to be taken. Sometimes you have to pick the fruit when it's ripe. We didn’t get as far as we may have wanted but we set the table for a lot of conversations that are happening now, two years later. You can see those issues on the horizon, but they were not ripe. And I wish we could have gotten to some of the things that are tied up in the settlement, but I do feel like we opened the door for some of the discussion that led to where they are.” Full Q&A on ADU. Before investing in Football HC Bill Belichick and his staff, North Carolina had “already been shoring up its athletics budget by transferring millions of dollars from other institutional funds to support varsity sports,” according to The Assembly’s Matt Hartman and Zachery Eanes. Specifically, they report UNC supplied $21.4M to support athletics last year between direct payments, services, debt payments, and rental fees. That figure doesn’t include the $8M in student fees that go to athletics. While such transfers are common among many universities, Hartman and Eanes note that between 2011-22, UNC “provided less than $2M a year in services to athletics, but no direct payments or facilities payments.” Asst. AD for Communications Kevin Best tells Hartman and Eanes: “Consistent with our peer institutions, the University is investing some institutional funds to the athletic department on an annual basis.” Best also emphasizes that the funds come from neither state appropriations nor tuition dollars, adding: “This reflects the evolving business model nationwide and highlights the importance of athletics to our institution, our brand and our overall success. … This institutional support of Athletics has particularly benefited Olympic Sports as the college athletics funding model continues to evolve.” Lots more. Blueprint Sports has retained prominent sports attorney Tom Mars to represent the Arkansas Edge collective as it seeks to enforce the buyout clauses in the NIL agreements of former Arkansas WR Dazmin James (Cal) and QB Madden Iamaleava (UCLA). Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner, who is representing James, tells CBS’ Brandon Marcello he believes the clause is “unenforceable as written and applied, under Arkansas state law. For liquidated damages to be valid, they must reasonably estimate potential damages and apply when actual damages are hard to determine. Here, since Dazmin James received no payment and the agreement was terminated just a few days after execution, [Blueprint] suffered no harm. Thus, the clause appears to be a penalty rather than a fair estimation of damages, making it unenforceable." (link)

Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter observes that an “issue with having buyouts/liquidated damages tied to NIL agreements is that schools and/or collectives have to show the amount was a reasonable estimate of potential damages in the event of breach. But from not having the athlete’s NIL rights for the term, not their athletic services. I think it will be hard for many schools/collectives to show the amount of some buyouts was a reasonable estimate of their damages. Are they harmed to that level by not being able to use the athlete’s NIL? Much easier to show damages if agreements are for athletic services. That’s why you don’t see a lot of litigation relating to coaching buyouts. Contract buyouts are connected to damages resulting from loss of coaching services.” Heitner adds: “Further, does Arkansas want to be known as the school that sues its players, including those who haven’t even received any payment under the agreement at issue? A weird hill to die on.” (link)

Former Virginia Senior Assoc. AD/SWA/Women's Lacrosse HC Jane Miller sits down with Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz for a conversation about elevating middle managers and building confidence in the middle of one's career, communicating with coaches as a sport administrator, and navigating a variety of leadership styles across a career trajectory. Miller's top tip for new sport administrators? "Listen. Have an open mind." Miller also offers insight into the early days of the transfer portal and the unforeseen impact of NIL, noting that today, "very good administrators and very good coaches are leaving because this is not what they signed up for and it has become a different enterprise than it was when we started. I have such great respect for coaches who – even when I was an administrator and now as I’m out – because of what they have to do compared to what I had to do. And I coached two sports for a while, but that was nothing compared to what someone coaching nowadays [has to do].” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

More from Disney CEO Bob Iger’s remarks at last week’s World Congress of Sports, where he noted that younger audiences are “gravitating to new platforms” and like “bite-size entertainment.” As it relates to Flagship, Iger explained the idea is to give younger fans more personalization, including multiple screens and camera angles. “Young audiences want a little bit more control, and technology gives them a little bit more authority to exercise the control. Streaming and the technology behind it will enable that.” Meanwhile, Iger promised not to abandon ESPN’s linear channels, which remain profitable. “There’s value, but it’s much more driven by serving the sports fan that is going to stay in the bundle, either because it’s comfortable for them, or they’re just not interested in becoming streaming customers. I like the fact that we remain loyal to them. … By the same token, if we’re not fishing where the younger fish are, ultimately, we lose our business. So leaning heavily now into the digital space – where we know a lot more people are going – is critical to serving those fans.” More from Puck’s John Ourand. (link)

The Atlanta Hawks “are part of a growing crop of sports teams that have created positions or refined roles with the intent of getting celebrity butts into premium seats,” according to the New York Times’ Emmanuel Morgan, who adds: “Stars can help excite fans and enliven the atmosphere of games on television and social media, while also leading to more focused partnerships down the line.” Hawks CEO Steve Koonin tells Morgan that “the lines blur and the audiences enjoy it because people don’t live in one box. They don’t say, ‘I’m just a sports fan.’ They love the opportunity to see and experience celebrities from all over the entertainment spectrum as part of the sports scene.” When demand is high for courtside seats and space is limited, Hawks VP for Entertainment Industry Relations Levetta Futrell explains social media following can be a deciding factor: “We’re just trying to prioritize and figure out how to make everybody happy, especially those who can amplify our experience and we can amplify theirs.” An NBA spokesman tells Morgan that at least five of the 16 teams in the playoffs have dedicated business department staff to handle celebrity and influencer relationships. Those teams include the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons. (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown examines how the disparate schools across the NCAA can meet a high standard of medical care for student-athletes, and USCAH President/Big Ten CMO James Borchers says: “I think probably the biggest misperception is that there's a singular way that this [athlete medical care and compliance] needs to be accomplished. If there’s a standard for the largest institutions, that doesn’t necessarily mean that has to be applied at every institution.” While a Power 4 athletic department may not have a problem hiring eight medical professionals to meet certain standards, Borchers notes that a “DIII school probably can’t meet that requirement, so they have to think of a different way to meet that standard?” What would be bad for the industry, Borchers adds, would be for that smaller school to look at the Power 4, and decide “well, we can’t hire those eight people, so we can’t meet those standards.” Borchers adds: “I think there’s a significant intention [from schools] to say that we didn’t know, so we could maintain some level of deniability...and to be honest with you, that loses every single time.” (link)

Northwestern is launching the Kellogg Coaches Leadership Academy, which will provide business and leadership training specifically designed for collegiate coaches. The academy formalizes a partnership between the athletic department and the Kellogg School of Management and will include curriculum in business analytics, crisis management, dynamic relationship shifts, complex negotiations and selling in uncertain situations. The inaugural cohort will include head coaches and key staff from all 21 of Northwestern's varsity programs. Wildcats AD Mark Jackson: "At Northwestern, we have very talented coaches that inspire excellence and develop our student-athletes in extraordinary ways every day. What better way to invest in the talents of our coaches than by tapping into the world-class faculty right here at Northwestern. The Kellogg Coaches Leadership Academy will help further train our coaches and staff in the critical skills needed in today's collegiate athletic world." (link)

Useful rundown from ESPN’s David Purdum on the type of prop bets the NCAA will prohibit from sports books if they want access to the new data feed with Genius Sports: Player-specific underperformance, negative outcomes for an individual student-athlete, injuries or health-related wagers, decisions by officials or replays, off-the-field developments like activity connected to the transfer portal, novelty items like the color of a Gatorade bath & honors dictated by public vote. According to one Big Ten men’s basketball coach, “this [transfer portal] cycle was out of control. So many players were overpaid, backups even. It was all a money grab, no one looked at fit.” An SEC coach agrees, telling On3’s Jamie Shaw: “This has been the craziest cycle yet. Everyone made double what they thought they were going to get. There are no rules. There are no regulations.” Meanwhile, an ACC coach says: “I think most agree that what we are doing is unsustainable. With the pending House settlement, which will cost all universities valuable revenue for the next 10 years, there is little chance universities can consistently come up with $7-10M every single year. We can all blame the agents/third parties for driving up the price, but the reality is for right now, we have plenty of schools willing to pay the price tags demanded.” At the other end of the spectrum, an SEC coach tells Shaw: “I think this all is sustainable. Sports are the center of American society, and people want to see their teams win. So, I think the market may begin to balance out the haves and have-nots as far as deep-pocketed boosters are concerned.” Part of the market reset can be attributed to the timing of the House settlement hearing this month, according to a Big 12 coach, who explains: “There was so much false hysteria created around the April 7 house settlement deadline. We all had extra time on the back end. I think we’re going to look back and people will say they rushed into a decision in fear of that April 7 date.” (link)

Toledo Men’s Basketball HC Tod Kowalczyk is finding success in the transfer portal by reaching out to players he recruited out of high school and tells the Toledo Blade’s Kyle Rowland: “Most of the guys that we’ve had success with, we had prior relationships with, even going back to Rian Pearson, who followed me [from Wisconsin-Green Bay]. … Having that prior relationship really means a lot because you know the people, you know the family, you’ve followed their career path.” Kyler VanderJagt, who is transferring in from Central Michigan, confirms that prior relationships with the staff made the process easier. “It almost felt like a second home. It was a no-brainer for me. I’m very comfortable with my decision.” Rockets AHC Justin Ingram adds: “It benefits us a ton with the transfer portal because everything is done so fast, and you have to get to know somebody in such a short amount of time. Already having an established relationship with the player, the family, and the people around him, there’s a lot of familiarity. There’s trust. If you are familiar with the people, and you trust them, and you like them, it makes it easier for you to make a quicker decision.” (link)

Arizona Football GM Gaizka Crowley joins the Moneyballers: Inside the College Front Office podcast to discuss the evolution of the GM role and how he views his responsibilities for the Wildcats. Crowley explains: “What I always tell our people is we need to watch players with the coach's eyes. Like, that's our job. My job isn't to find the best players that I like the most. My job is to find the best players for the University of Arizona that fit our culture and what our head coach wants. … We could have 100 staff members, but if we're all watching different things and we all prioritize different things, we'll have more guys watch. But at the end of the day, that's not what it's about. It's about finding the right players for us with our culture, scheme, city, community.” Regarding his message for agents writ large, Crowley explains that “I don't think they realize how small my world is. … I think, my nickel's worth of advice for agents is to realize when you have a conversation with School A and a conversation with School B, those two people probably know each other. And know that if there's information that's not being spoken, that's not true, we're going to find out pretty, pretty quickly. … But, the biggest thing is if you want your guy kind of at the top of the stack, if you will, if there's connections, if there's certain relationships with coaches or there's scheme fits, those kinds of things, that definitely helps.” Full podcast. Washington Deputy AD/SWA Kim Durand sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to talk about how her team navigated three AD transitions within the span of an academic year while also dealing with a Football HC change and transitioning from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten. Durand also offers insight into maintaining stability for her direct reports as well as for student-athletes and notes that she encouraged her staff to remain grounded in the department’s “sole purpose” of serving athletes while remaining open to new ideas from new leaders. Durand: “We are relentlessly committed to our culture…but that has to be something you're working on on a daily basis. You can't take it for granted. You can't say,’ Hey, these other areas are a big focus.’ You have to spend time getting to know each other, checking in on each other, supporting each other, having tough conversations when those things have to happen. So, I think a lot of that [is] we recruit people into our system at every level who are committed to that and then we consistently, continuously model that as we go forward.” More on ADU. (link)
