WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) with locations in Weatherford, Sayre, and Yukon has announced the establishment of the Coach John Loftin Endowment for Women's Basketball.
The new endowment will provide ongoing scholarship and programming funds for the Lady Bulldogs Basketball program.
John Loftin enjoyed an historic run of success as Head Women's Basketball Coach at SWOSU, amassing 861 wins in a career that spanned 38 seasons, including 19 at SWOSU. Loftin made an indelible and lasting impact at SWOSU. His first team rolled to an unbeaten 34-0 season which included capturing the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championship in 1982. NAIA titles followed in 1983, 1985, 1987 and 1990. All total, SWOSU made 14 appearances in the NAIA Tournament, including 10 Final Four Appearances, and 1 national runner-up placement in 1992 under Loftin's leadership.
In 2011, Loftin was inducted into the SWOSU Athletic Hall of Fame. An induction into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 2012 followed securing his stature as an Oklahoma coaching legend.
A 40th reunion event is planned for the 1983 SWOSU Women's Basketball National Championship team on February 25, 2023. The team and Coach Loftin will be recognized during the Lady Bulldogs basketball game that afternoon and donors to the endowment will be recognized during a reception.
