Michael Jewell Hired to Launch Malone University Women’s Lacrosse Program

11/18/22

CANTON -- Today, Malone University Director of Athletics Tanya Hockman announced the appointment of Michael Jewell to the position of head women's lacrosse coach.

Jewell served as the interim head coach at Ashland University during the 2021 season where he coached four total All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) honorees on the field, and had fourteen players earn either All-Academic Excellence or All-Academic honors from the GLIAC.

Jewell's lacrosse background also includes nearly a decade of experience as an official at both the high school and collegiate level, as well as working as the assistant boys lacrosse coach at Wooster High School and working with the Wooster Lacrosse Club.

"We are thrilled to announce Coach Jewell as the inaugural head coach of our women's lacrosse program," Hockman stated. "His passion and enthusiasm for the sport is energizing. I have confidence Michael will recruit strong academic-focused student-athletes, and build a program on the field that models the values of Pioneer athletics."

"I am very excited to be selected as head coach for the inaugural women's lacrosse team," Jewell stated. "I am honored to be part of this historic moment at Malone University.  I would like to thank Director of Athletics Tanya Hockman, President Dr. Miller, and the search committee for believing in me. Together we are going to build a first class program based on the core values of faith, love, family, and integrity. I am truly blessed!"

Outside of the game of lacrosse, Jewell is a retired career law enforcement officer, and has worked for the Wooster Police Department since 1993. In 2001 he was elevated to the role of Patrol Sergeant.

"As a former police sergeant I bring experience in leadership, management, and life lessons that will be able to help me direct and mold student-athletes into vibrant members of the church and community," Jewell said.

Jewell is a graduate of Akron University, the FBI Leadership Academy, and the Police Executive Leadership Academy.

He has been married to his wife Beth for 23 years, and the couple have three children.
