A Letter from Vice Chancellor Josh Berlo: December Brand Update

The tradition-laden arch Denver will remain on the front of uniforms, serving as a bridge from the past to the future

Dear Friends of DU Athletics,

Greetings from the Daniel L. Ritchie Center for Sports & Wellness on the campus of the University of Denver. I hope this note finds you well and enjoying the holiday season.

For the past two years, the University has been working toward a single visual identity system for all University entities, including athletics, to reflect our path forward as One DU. Through the diligent efforts of many, the resulting logomark—a contemporary take on our iconic DU monogram—and accompanying brand system will work well across various mediums, ranging from uniforms, media outlets, apparel and beyond.

Additionally, the tradition-laden arch Denver will remain on the front of uniforms, serving as a bridge from the past to the future, and meeting the requirement to display the name of our institution as we compete for championships in our great 18-sport programs. The arch Denver has represented Pioneer athletic teams since the mid-1950's, as seen below. This emblem has seen many victories, championships, defeats and character-building moments. I am proud to share with you today the next evolution in this iconic mark in alignment with our unified brand system for DU.

The hockey jersey above right is a mock-up, not an actual jersey.

Our colors will once again become a bit more vibrant as well. Crimson and gold continue to represent our passion and determination to succeed, and our bright future.

As you know, these transitions take time to fulfill, and this will be a process over the coming years. We will debut our unified brand on uniforms sometime in the 2023-2024 season.

In the meantime, I want to share some thoughts from our past and present Pioneers:

"Through my 50 years as a Denver Pioneer, the Denver brand has continued to grow across the country. It's not just the 34 National Championships and countless Division-I NCAA Tournament appearances across a wide range of programs, it's the way Denver student-athletes showcase their combination of success athletically, academically and in life after college in various fields across the country and world.  They carry that tradition of excellence with them wherever they go. This modern version of a brand known and loved by so many that have set foot on this campus will continue to build on the legacy of the Pioneers that have come before." – Ron Grahame, hockey All-American and former athletic director.

"Our brand travels across the country and beyond throughout our competition season. It lives within us and is shared externally to fulfill the mission of our University. We adorn it proudly across our chest to represent our institution while living out our passion for sport. Our modernized University brand reflects unity—one team, one community, one DU. It's our legacy and we will wear it proudly." - Joy S. Burns Head Women's Gymnastics Coach, Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart.

"From my time stepping foot on this beautiful campus in 2001 to my time as an associate head coach today, and everything in-between, I'm proud to represent this University across North America. The new DU brand doesn't erase the history and tradition that has made the University of Denver what it is today, but its modern look and feel capitalizes on the success of the past and puts the University in a position to continue to succeed into the future. We're proud to be Pioneers, and we're proud to represent the University of Denver." – Matt Brown, alumnus and lacrosse associate head coach.

"Our hockey program carries a wealth of tradition here at the University of Denver with nine national titles. As our brand evolves, our program and students will continue to represent everything it has always meant to be a Pioneer." – Richard and Kitzia Goodman head hockey coach, David Carle.

We hope you are as excited as we are with the modernization of brand elements that honor our great championship legacy at DU.

Thank you for your continued support and, as always, GO PIONEERS!
