Javelina Athletics agrees to contract extension with head coach Mike Salinas

New contract agreement sees Salinas extended through 2026

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M University – Kingsville and head football coach Mike Salinas have agreed to a contract extension through the 2026 season. Salinas' extension comes after the most successful season in program history since 2016 including the Javelinas' first postseason appearance since the same year.

"We are off to a winning tradition and bringing that back to Javelina football, and coach Salinas represents the best," said university President Dr. Robert Vela regarding the extension. "I believe in what he is doing with our students, he is starting with culture, attitude, and respect. He's not just building a winning tradition, but he is building young men that are going to be successful in whatever they do. That's what we as educators want for our students, to have success on the field, but also be successful in life."

The 2022 season saw a two-win improvement over the 2021 campaign and the best start to a season since 2009 as TAMUK started 7-0 in coach Salinas' third season at the helm. The season also featured a win over at the time No. 12/14 West Texas A&M for the Javelina's first win over a ranked opponent in over a decade.

"On behalf of our coaching staff and our football program I would like to thank President Dr. Robert Vela, Executive Director of Athletics Steve Roach, and all of our administration for their support and commitment to our football program," said Salinas. "Thanks to our coaches, staff, and student-athletes. I am proud of the progress we have made in three years, and I am excited about the future of Javelina Football."

Additionally, in 2022, cornerback Amos Coleman was named first-team AFCA All-American, the first Javelina to earn the honor since 2012.

"I'm excited to announce the extension of Coach Salinas," said Executive Director of Athletics Steve Roach. "For the past three years, Coach has built a strong foundation and we have watched the program consistently progress under his leadership. His strong commitment to his student-athletes, both on and off the field, and in the classroom, only further strengthens my confidence that the program will continue to achieve success and continue the strong tradition of Javelina Football."

The 2023 season will mark Salinas' fourth year in charge of the Javelinas.
