The NFL’s racial hiring grade dipped slightly, but its gender hiring grade improved significantly which raised its overall diversity hiring score, according to a report issued today by The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES). The NFL received an overall diversity hiring grade of B, same as last year, but its score improved from 81.8 points to 83.2 points. The league’s gender grade improved from a C+ to a B and its point score from 75.0 to 81.4. The NFL’s racial hiring grade remained the same at a B+ but its point score dipped from 88.5 to 85.0. “Part of the decline is related to the adjustment of grading scale to reflect the 2020 census,” Richard Lapchick, Dir of TIDES, said in the report. “However, the NFL has continued to make progress in the hiring practices within the League Office. In contrast, there is still room for improvement in the disparities in the racial and gender hiring practices between the NFL League Office and the 32 teams.”
Among the highlights of the report, the NFL received an A+ for racial hiring of assistant coaches. “The percentage of assistant coaches of color increased from 40.9 percent in 2021 to 42.9 percent in 2022, an all-time high for the NFL,” the report said. The league received a C grade for gender hiring of head coaches. The percentage of people of color who are NFL head coaches increased from 15.6% in 2021 to 18.8% in 2022. The NFL received an F as its racial diversity grade for team owners and a D+ as its gender diversity grade for team owners.
