South Alabama’s Kane Wommack has agreed to a contract extension through the 2028 season, the school announced Thursday.
The Jaguars finished the regular-season at 10-2 in Wommack’s second year on the job, recording the most victories since becoming an FBS program in 2012. They also doubled their 2021 win total and qualified for a bowl game for the first time since 2016.
“We’re very excited, but at the same time very appreciative of Kane to extend his commitment to the University of South Alabama and our community,” athletics director Joel Erdmann said. “It is without question that our trajectory is very impressive in all aspects of the football program. And that is directly related to the leadership of our head coach.”
Erdmann told AL.com that Wommack’s new contract will pay him $810,000 per season, up from $700,000 under his original contract, which ran through 2025. The new deal also includes budgetary increases for on-field assistant coaches and other off-field staff, though buyout amounts will remain similar.
South Alabama went 7-1 in the Sun Belt Conference, tying with Troy for first in the West Division standings. The Trojans beat the Jaguars 10-6 in Mobile on Oct. 20, giving them the tiebreaker for a berth in Saturday’s Sun Belt championship game.
The 35-year-old Wommack is 15-9 in two seasons at South Alabama, which is his first head-coaching job. He came to Mobile after three seasons at Indiana, where he was a Broyles Award finalist for national assistant coach of the year in 2020 as the Hoosiers’ defensive coordinator.
Wommack — the youngest FBS head coach in the country this year — previously spent two seasons (2016-17) as South Alabama’s defensive coordinator under Joey Jones. He has also worked at Eastern Illinois, UT Martin, Ole Miss and Jacksonville State.
South Alabama will learn its postseason destination on Sunday, the day after conference championship games are complete.
