The Iowa Board of Regents on Wednesday voted to allow Iowa State University to plan for an up to $12 million renovation of the Scheman Building.

The university's athletic department manages Scheman and other buildings in the Iowa State Center. It wants to update the Scheman Building's event space, which includes creating club space similar to Johnny's at Hilton Coliseum.

The "dynamic event space" will be used to enhance all events held at the 48-year-old facility and the game-day experience for Cyclone Club members who attend events next door at Hilton Coliseum, according to a news release from the athletic department.

The department plans to update the building’s entrance lobby, restrooms, event and circulation spaces. Benton Auditorium would be converted to an open, flexible event space. The facility also would get upgraded entrances, new interior finishes, lighting and food and beverage amenities.

Architects will evaluate the exterior elevated walkway network for any upgrades.

The renovations are expected to be paid for with athletic department revenues. The work could be completed as early as the 2024-2025 school year, if the board of regents gives final approval to proceed with the project after plans are drawn up, the news release said.

"We believe this is a much needed reinvestment that will enhance the experience for everyone who attends future events in the facility," Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said in a statement.

The athletic department said in its news release it also plans projects worth more than $1 million to improve Stephens Auditorium, such as replacing carpet and updating restrooms. Those should be completed by fall.
