Radford University head basketball coach charged with DUI

Radford University's men's basketball head coach, Darris Nichols, was charged with driving under the influence on Sunday.

According to the Radford Police Department, Darris Nichols, 36, of Radford was charged with Misdemeanor DUI, on February 19, 2023.

The police department said the offense occurred in the area of Pershing Avenue and Wadsworth Street.

ABC 13 reached out to Radford University for comment and received this statement:

"Radford University is currently evaluating the situation. Shane Nichols will serve as acting head coach. This is a personnel matter, and we have no further comment at this time," Becky Brackin, Associate Vice President for University Relations said.

According to jail officials, Nichols was booked into the New River Valley Regional Jail on February 19 around 11:40 p.m. and he was released on a $3,500 unsecured bond on February 20.
