2023 Academic Achievement Awards

Akron Athletics Implements Academic Achievement Awards

February 21 | General

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron Athletics Department will begin providing financial awards for academic achievement to its student-athletes thanks to a generous gift from an anonymous donor.

Academic Achievement Awards will begin in the fall of 2023 for the Zips men's and women's basketball programs. Student-athletes will be eligible to receive the award based on their academic performance. Basketball student-athletes finished the fall of 2022 with a 3.03 GPA and collectively boast an overall cumulative GPA of 3.12.

"Providing Academic Achievement Awards for the basketball programs aligns with our vision to implement a comprehensive championship experience for UA student-athletes," Akron Director of Athletics Charles Guthrie said. "I want to thank our Senior Associate Athletic Director Camden Stockton for securing the gift commitment from key donors and Senior Associate Athletic Director Jackie Wallgren for developing a comprehensive program to assist in facilitating awards to our basketball student-athletes."

Award amounts are determined based on many factors including eligibility, progress towards degree and meeting academic benchmarks, measured by GPA and graduation. The program will follow NCAA and MAC requirements.

"I am excited that UA will offer this opportunity to our student-athletes. We have always prioritized academic success and graduation." Senior Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator Jackie Wallgren said of the new academic awards. "These Academic Achievement Awards allow us to 'put our money where our mouth is' and rewards student-athletes for achieving in the classroom."

The Supreme Court ruling Alston v NCAA 2021, allowed universities to provide academic achievement awards with direct financial support. Up to $5,980 can be provided to each student-athlete per year.
