The Higher Learning Commission has removed the sanction of probation for Wheeling University effective immediately.

Since 2014, the school, formerly known as Wheeling Jesuit, had been on notice.

President Ginny Favede came aboard in 2019 -- a time when debt was growing, and enrollment was declining. It was also time for its 10-year accreditation.

"What we discovered was numerous issues, dating back to 2014 from financial issues, the bylaws have not been redone to accommodate the university that we are today,” Favede said.

In March 2021, the HLC put the university on probation.

Since then, the school has worked overtime to get straightened out. Those bylaws were updated, debt was cut in half, and students were finding the school a destination spot again.

"We can move forward as a university with no concerns growing the university, creating efficiencies and creating success for our students," Favede said.

For students, it means they get access to federal grants, and their class credits are transferable to other colleges.

"It is ensures that their degree is worthwhile," Favede said. “This has been a herculean effort from everyone at this university.

“It’s a glorious day for all of us. You know we love this place."
