Dear Friends of Temple Athletics,

I hope you all had a safe and healthy holiday season and 2023 is off to a great start.

The winter break provided a great opportunity to reflect on my first 13 months at Temple and all the changes in the intercollegiate athletics landscape.  From the transfer portal to conference realignment, all you have to do is read the headlines and you can grasp that the industry continues to evolve.  One such evolution has been in changes to NCAA and state legislation that allows student-athletes to monetize their name, image and likeness (NIL) and earn compensation for appearances, camps, endorsements, promotional activities, etc.

When this became permissible on July 1st, 2021, Temple Athletics worked to be on the forefront of educating our student-athletes on ways they can maximize their personal brands.  Driven by a multidisciplinary committee of experts from brand strategy, NCAA compliance, legal counsel, and academia, Temple implemented wide-spread programming to support our student-athletes in their NIL activities.  This included the incorporation of NIL topics into a required course for all first-year student-athletes, financial literacy workshops, and one-on-one consultations on personal social media brand development.

We also hosted our first NIL Business Education Workshop in collaboration with Comcast Business this past fall.  During the event, businesses from across the region heard from industry experts on how working with student-athletes can positively impact their brands and bottom lines.  Additionally, prior to the event, we unveiled the Temple Owl Exchange, which provides approved businesses with a platform to connect, engage and propose NIL opportunities to Temple student-athletes.  If your business would like to participate in promotional activities with our student-athletes, I encourage you to visit the Exchange and register.

Another opportunity for you to get involved in NIL with our student-athletes is through the TUFF Fund, a third-party collective that supports Temple Athletics.  The TUFF Fund works by combining resources to provide NIL opportunities to our student-athletes.  The TUFF Fund's leadership shares our commitment to the Temple student-athlete experience and their efforts are greatly appreciated.  In short, any support of the TUFF Fund is support for Temple Athletics.

Whether through the Owl Club, season tickets to football, men's and women's basketball, or NIL activities through the Temple Owl Exchange or TUFF Fund, there are many different ways to help support Temple Athletics and our student-athletes.  I encourage you to click the links above to learn more about any or all of these opportunities.  With your help, we remain steadfast in our goals: providing our student-athletes with great experiences while helping them to grow holistically, graduating with a Temple degree, and competing for championships.

Best,

Arthur Johnson
