AUSTIN, Texas – Honoring the two winningest baseball coaches in program history, the Concordia Texas Baseball team has announced that Tornado Field will be named Gardner-Boggs Field. CTX President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Don Christian and Director of Athletics Ronda Seagraves broke the news at the baseball team's annual event 'Dining With the Stars'. An announcement with more details on the renaming of the field will be made at a later date. Mike Gardner and Tommy Boggs have led the Tornados as the skippers for the past two-plus decades, and accumulated a combined 581 wins.

Coach Mike Gardner
Coach Gardner led the Tornados to 242 wins during his tenure as the head coach from 2000-2009. He is a member of the Concordia Athletics Hall of Fame, inducted in 2012, for his success at the helm of the program.

In 2002, Gardner's team won 35 games and advanced to the Division III College World Series title game, the furthest the program has advanced in school history. Besides the 2002 season, Gardner and CTX appeared in the American Southwest Conference Tournament five times, and he was honored as the ASC West Division Tri-Coach of the Year in 2008.

All in all, Gardner mentored 85 student-athletes who went on to earn ASC postseason recognition. Nine of them went on to earn major awards - as ASC West Division Newcomer of the Year, ASC West Division Pitcher of the Year and ASC West Division Freshman of the Year for their efforts.

Coach Tommy Boggs
Starting his stint at Concordia Texas in 2009, Coach Boggs spearheaded the program for 13 seasons following Coach Gardner. He led the Concordia Tornados to 339 victories, the most wins in the team's history. His achievements include extending the team's post-season play five times with entry into NCAA regional berths, one NCAA Super Regional appearance, three American Southwest Conference Tournament championships (2011, '12, and '13), and three ASC regular season titles in 2014, 2016, and 2018.

In 2012, Boggs and his assistants were named the American Southwest Conference West Division Coaching Staff of the Year after leading CTX to its second straight ASC Tournament crown and NCAA West Regional appearance. The Tornados, who became the first program in school history to make consecutive Division III postseason appearances and were ranked as high as fourth nationally, improved their win total for the third time in as many years by recording 37 wins. The team's 37 victories during the season were the most in the program's Division III era, surpassing the 35 that were recorded by Coach Gardner's team in 2002.

On March 24, 2018, Boggs surpassed his predecessor became the winningest coach in CTX baseball history in a 7-5 victory over Hardin-Simmons. On Feb. 28, 2020, he earned his 300th coaching win of his career as the Tornados defeated Louisiana College 2-1.
