Martorana Retained as Head Men's Soccer Coach

11/8/2022 10:36:00 AM

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer program has its new head coach as Director of Athletics Courtney Lovely Evans has announced the retainment of Lucas Martorana who served as interim head coach during the 2022 season.

"I've was very impressed with how Lucas handled the opportunity to lead Sailfish men's soccer this fall," Lovely Evans said. "He has proven to be an excellent fit within our athletic department and a strong leader for our student-athletes. I believe in his ability to uphold the Sailfish standard on the field and in the classroom while helping us fulfill our mission of developing Christian Game Changers. I am excited to see how he will continue to grow as our next head men's soccer coach."

Martorana was at the reigns this past season for the Sailfish, serving as the interim head coach. The 'Fish got off to a quick start and climbed all the way to No. 2 in the nation according to the United Soccer Coaches poll. PBA was able to defeat then ranked No. 9 Saint Leo as well as two teams in Lander and Rollins who qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The Sailfish finished the season with a 8-5-2 record and missed out on the Sunshine State Conference Tournament by one point.

"First I have to express a tremendous amount of gratitude to PBA and the athletics department for the support this past season," said Martorana. "The entire department has been fantastic in the transition this fall, and I am honored, excited and thankful for the opportunity to serve as head coach of the men's soccer program. I'm specifically very thankful to AD Courtney Lovely Evans and Associate AD TJ Budd for the support they have shown me this past season and their trust in me to lead the program going forward."

"When I reflect on this past season I'm humbled by the attitude, commitment and professionalism of the coaching staff; they put in their best everyday for me and the student athletes. As a result we saw tremendous growth in the team and are ready to prepare for the future. There's no question the point of what we do is prepare to win, but more important, the purpose of what we do is to prepare for what's next both on and off the field. Through soccer I was surrounded by people who taught me to serve and live a purpose driven life. The "beautiful game" also empowered me to be the best for those around me and ultimately grow in gratitude to God for the diverse gifts and talents He will create in us. My aim is that I can be part of facilitating that in the next generation through the amazing people, resources, and facilities at PBA. I look forward to not only coaching these men to success on the field, but also helping them develop the character and traits they need to be leaders in their careers, families, and community."

Martorana has been involved in the success of the PBA program, as he started with the 'Fish in 2017 where he served as an assistant coach for five seasons and was elevated to associate head coach prior to the 2020 season. He has been instrumental in on-field training sessions and recruiting for a program that has won four Sunshine State Conference titles and carries a 61-9-6 record during his tenure as an assistant and made the NCAA postseason in six-straight seasons.

Before his time at PBA, Martorana had a playing career at the University of Buffalo for three seasons before transferring to Malone University where he captained the Pioneers in 2007. He received All-Region and All-Conference accolades while earning his degree in Mathematics.

After his playing career, he coached at Malone for four years as an assistant and earned his master's in school counseling and guidance. He has coached youth soccer for over 12 years in Ohio, Florida, and New York and holds his NSCAA Director of Coaching, Premier, Advanced National, National, Futsal, Goalkeeper level 1 diplomas and has his USSF D License.

Lucas is a Warren, Ohio native who is married to Christine Martorana and has a daughter, Sofia.
