The cause of the budget cut was a fifty-eight million dollar shortfall within the University of Nebraska System toward the end of September. UNK announced a draft for budget reduction proposing to cut 30 positions and eliminate degrees such as Journalism, Theatre, and Geography.
A total of 15 faculty positions would be cut.

Three areas of study would be eliminated based on these recommendations while other fields of study would have to be re-worked into emphasis areas, allowing students to earn a degree rather than having to choose a different university.
The budget cuts over the past two decades have limited UNK's fiscal flexibility, meaning any more cuts will have a more direct effect on student experience than they have in the past.
Updates will be posted as they become available.
