CAVS FALL TO BULLDOGS ON SENIOR DAY

WISE - - Wingate University claimed its eighth football victory of the season with a 27-0 shutout over UVA Wise at Carl Smith Stadium Saturday. It marked the second time the Cavaliers have been shutout this season and the last for Head Coach Dane Damron. The eighth-year coach announced his resignation to the team immediately following the conclusion of the contest.

Wingate (8-3, 7-2 SAC) controlled the game from start to finish. The Bulldogs limited the Cavs (2-9, 1-8 SAC) to just 160 yards of total offense.

Marquise Fleming had a big day on defense for the visitors as he posted six tackles for loss and three sacks as part of an 11-tackle performance that also included a forced fumble.

Wingate led 10-0 at intermission behind a 19-yard touchdown pass from Brooks Bentley to Matt Flanders and a 45-yard field goal from Caleb Bonesteel. Bentley added a pair of touchdown runs in the third quarter as the Bulldogs went to the fourth quarter on top 24-0.

Bonestel added a 21-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to provide the final winning margin of 27-0.

Senior Jaevon Gillespie rushed for 62 yards on 18 carries in his final game as a Cav while Patrick Taylor (7) and Brub Hines III (6) led the defense in tackles.

Updated information on the ensuing search for a new football coach will be released next week.
