North Texas has filled the final opening in its 2023 football schedule by adding a game against Florida International.
UNT will face the Panthers on Sept. 9 in Miami and will host FIU in the second half of a home-and-home series in 2029.
A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed UNT’s plans to the Denton Record-Chronicle on Tuesday morning. The school later announced the series.
FIU is a familiar opponent for UNT. The schools are members of Conference USA and played a home-and-home series the last two seasons.
UNT is among six schools leaving C-USA for the American Athletic Conference this summer.
UNT’s slate in the American will have the Mean Green continue their annual series with SMU after the American designated the Mustangs UNT’s natural rival.
UNT’s complete slate of conference games for its first year in the American has yet to be announced, but the addition of a game at FIU gives the Mean Green a clear picture of what they will face in nonconference play.
UNT will host Cal on Sept. 2, travel to Louisiana Tech on Sept. 16 and host Abilene Christian on Sept. 30 in addition to playing FIU.
UNT won both of its last two games against FIU, including a 52-14 blowout this year at Apogee Stadium that evened the all-time series between the teams at 5-5.
FIU finished 4-8 last season and dropped its final four games of the year.
FIU is the second team that will be a member of C-USA in 2023 that UNT has added to its schedule. Louisiana Tech is also a member of C-USA and is remaining in the league.
UNT will face FIU in a time of change for the program. Eric Morris is entering his first season as the Mean Green’s coach.
Morris, the former offensive coordinator at Washington State, took over for Seth Littrell, who was fired after UNT’s loss to UTSA in the C-USA championship game.
UNT finished 7-7 in Littrell’s final season after falling to Boise State in the Frisco Bowl under interim coach Phil Bennett.
