Steinkamp Named Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities and Operations

Waterville, Maine – Colby Athletics recently announced Ben Steinkamp as Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities and Operations.   He rolls into the position after a successful transition from the United States Navy via the Skillbridge program.

"Ben's experience, although not traditional for a career in athletics, lends itself nicely to the skill set needed to be a remarkably successful Facilities and Operations director within collegiate athletics," said Deputy Athletics Director Casie Runksmeier. "Throughout his 21 years with the Navy, he demonstrated an ability to manage a number of high level projects simultaneously with incredible results."

Originally from Littleton, Colorado, Steinkamp spent 21 years as a parachute rigger, transitioning into various operational leadership positions near the end of his tenure.  He arrived at Colby in May of 2023 as part of the Skillbridge program, working for Colby Athletics assisting operations within the equipment room.  Skillbridge is a program designed to help separating and retiring active duty service members acclimate and adjust back into civilian life at the end of their service, often connecting established skills and interests with potential career aspirations post-military.

"Colby has been incredibly welcoming to myself and my family," said Steinkamp.  "Being able to use my established skills in a way like this never occurred to me until I looked at Colby.  What is going on in and around the Athletics Department is exceptional and I am incredibly excited to be on the team and help move the department even further."

Added Runksmeier, "During the hiring process, Ben demonstrated an extremely positive attitude, led with a yes, and was able to connect to all people.  These interpersonal skills are of ultimate importance for a position like this, and we are incredibly fortunate to have found such a great fit in Ben."
