Averett opens national search for director of track & field/cross country as Logan steps down

| By:
DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University is beginning a national search for its next director of men's and women's track and field/cross country following the resignation of Matt Logan, the school announced Tuesday.

Logan cited family reasons for stepping down.

"It has been a pleasure working with top-notch student-athletes, administrators, faculty and colleagues who make Averett University the great place that it is," Logan said. "I regret the timing of this decision, but in the best interest of my family, I am resigning my position as director of men's and women's track and field/cross country. Averett is in good hands and the future of the program is bright. I am thankful for the opportunity to learn and grow under the leadership of Meg Stevens. Most of all, I am thankful for the student-athletes I have had the opportunity to work with."

Averett is immediately looking to fill its director of men's and women's track and field/cross country position.

"Coach Logan helped us lay the foundation for our inaugural track and field programs during the fall semester, and we will continue to build upon their success and development moving forward," said Stevens, vice president, director of athletics and campus operations.

Averett's men's and women's indoor/outdoor track programs began competition as members of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in fall 2022 after the additions were announced in December 2021. The director position also oversees Averett's cross country programs, which have had a history of success — including a conference championship on the women's side.

The excitement of Averett's inaugural track and field programs also includes the construction of a new track facility, which is currently being completed. Averett partnered with Danville Public Schools in a lease arrangement for joint use and operation of the new track facility housed on the campus of George Washington High School, which is located several blocks away from Averett's Main Campus.

Logan was hired to take the helm of the cross country programs and jumpstart the track and field programs. Numerous cross country runners set personal bests with several records being broken this fall. The indoor track and field programs also made their debut on Dec. 3 at the Visit Winston-Salem College Kick-off.
