Mercyhurst Mourns Passing of Joseph Talarico

8/21/2023 5:17:00 PM

Mercyhurst University tragically lost a member of their student-athlete body and now mourns the loss of men's rower Joseph Talarico.

"Joseph was an active, high-achieving student who majored in Intelligence Studies, was a member of the Men's Rowing team, and was a friend to many people on this campus," noted Mercyhurst University's President, Kathleen Getz.

The native of Pittsburgh, Pa. was set to begin his third season as a member of the men's heavyweight rowing team, proving to be an integral part of the team's success in each of the past two campaigns while studying Intelligence Studies.

"This is an incredibly sad time for all those in the Mercyhurst Rowing Family. We lost one of our own and words can't express the loss we are feeling," said Director of Rowing Adrian Spracklen. "Joe made such a wonderful impression on all those that knew him. He was friendly, witty, and always had a smile on his face. He loved rowing and it was our privilege to have known him. Our hearts go out to his family and friends, and he will not be forgotten."

Memorial services have yet to be announced. Dr. Judy Smith, Executive Director of Health and Wellness, notes that those needing assistance should reach out to their support system and know that the Mercyhurst Counseling Center will be available this week Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at (814) 824-3650 to return calls to those needing to talk or looking for support.
