POMONA - Alex Kline, who spent five seasons in the Cal Poly Pomona baseball program from 2015-19, is back at his alma mater as the Assistant Athletics Director for Communications. Director of Athletics Brian Swanson made the announcement on Wednesday.

In his new role, which began this past Monday, Sept. 18, Kline oversees all aspects of sports information and communications for the CPP Department of Intercollegiate Athletics' 11 programs. His responsibilities include updating broncoathletics.com with the latest news, schedules, rosters, scores, statistics and historical records, as well as running the department's social media. Kline also assists with game management at all home events, supervising dozens of student staff and heading up the production of live streaming on the CCAA Network.

"We are excited that Alex Kline has chosen to return home and join Team Broncos," remarked Swanson. "Alex was a standout student-athlete during our last two Baseball World Series appearances. We know Cal Poly Pomona holds a special place in his heart, and we are looking forward to having Alex on our staff and helping us move our department forward. His creative abilities and familiarity with our conference and region are a welcomed addition to our program."

"I'm honored to return to Cal Poly Pomona as the Assistant AD for Communications," said Kline. "Having been a student-athlete at CPP, I have a deep passion for the success of this department and an admiration for the culture of excellence that exists on this campus - both athletically and academically. I'm excited to carry on the traditions and tell the story of our student-athletes' success.

"I would like to thank Brian Swanson and (Senior Associate AD/SWA) Pamela Donnelly for this fantastic opportunity. Go Broncos!"

Prior to his return to the Cal Poly Pomona campus, Kline was the Assistant Athletics Director for Communications and Marketing at California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rival Cal State San Bernardino during the 2022-23 academic year, the department's most successful of its NCAA Division II era. The Yotes laid claim to a combined winning percentage of .662, with six of their 10 programs making the NCAA postseason. The men's basketball and baseball squads, which together went a remarkable 77-23, both won West Region titles and were among the final four teams remaining in their respective NCAA tournaments, with Kline making trips to Evansville, Ind., and Cary, N.C., respectively, to coordinate all media coverage.

Ahead of those impressive runs, Kline handled the launch of the new csusbathletics.com website in the fall of 2022, bringing the project to completion within his first few months in the post and significantly improving the Yotes' digital footprint by integrating more creative content and giving the website a fresh visual design.

Before Cal State San Bernardino, Kline spent two years as an assistant in the sports information department at another Division II West Region program in Concordia University Irvine. While there, he introduced a marketing strategy that increased the Eagles' social media following by 25 percent over the course of 18 months, seven percent more than any other school in the Pacific West Conference during the same period. That growth played a significant role in CUI being named the 2021-22 PacWest Sports Information Department of the Year.

Between his time as a student at CPP and joining Concordia Irvine, Kline was the Brand Manager at Round2, a sporting goods app that allowed users to buy and sell sports equipment online. Going back to 2017 as an undergraduate, he has been a freelance digital marketer and graphic designer, working on projects for numerous companies.

Kline started 67 of 97 games played as a catcher for the CPP baseball team from 2016-19 under current head coach Randy Betten after redshirting as a freshman in 2015. He completed his career with a stellar .992 fielding percentage, being charged with just four errors over a total of 503 defensive chances. Kline dealt with all 106 chances cleanly as a senior in 2019 for a perfect 1.000 clip while aiding the Broncos to their second CCAA Tournament crown, improbably as the No. 6 seed.

Kline's Bronco squads compiled records of 182-110 (.623) overall and 129-74 (.635) in CCAA play, with five CCAA Tournament and four NCAA Championship berths, and five trophies. CPP achieved the 2015 and 2016 West Region crowns back to back with 40-plus-win campaigns to advance on to Cary, N.C., before posting 30 or more victories in each of Kline's final three seasons as well. The 2015 squad lifted both the CCAA regular-season and tournament banners. The Broncos also topped the CCAA South Division in 2016 and 2017.

Kline graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in 2019, earning a bachelor's degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Computer Information Systems and a minor in Marketing Management. He later completed his Master of Business Administration (MBA), also cum laude, from Concordia Irvine while working there in May of 2022.

Kline is a San Clemente native who attended San Clemente High School. He and his wife, Ashley, reside in Anaheim with their dog, Dug.
