Malm Promoted to Head Track and Field Coach

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque Announced Jake Malm has been promoted to Head Track and Field Coach. Malm returned to the University of Dubuque in June of 2021, as assistant track and field coach, after being the head cross country/track and field coach at Saint Mary's University (Minn.), a position he held since October, 2020.

"We are excited for Coach Malm to lead our track and field program," said Nelson Edmonds, Vice President of Student Engagement and Intercollegiate Athletics. "He has been an integral part in developing our program and pushing it to new heights on and off the track. What he has accomplished as a mentor for our student-athletes speaks volumes for who he is an educator, and the standards that he will have for our Spartans."

The Spartans qualified 15 individuals in 12 events for the 2023 NCAA Outdoor National Championships and claiming three All-Americans this past May. Malm coached at UD from 2013-2020, working with the throwers and managing the recruiting efforts. Under his leadership, the Spartans established a presence at the national level leading UD with two national championships in the shot put: Blaze Murfin (2018 - outdoor) and Tanasha Atwater (2017 - outdoor). For his efforts with the Spartan field student-athletes he earned four Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year accolades (two indoor/two outdoor).

"I'm excited about this opportunity," added Malm. "There's a lot that our student-athletes can accomplish here, and our staff is ready to work hard on their behalf. We all want this to be the most successful program it can be."

Malm helped 49 Spartan throwers qualify for the NCAA Division III National Track and Field Championships (indoor/outdoor) and coached 28 Spartans to All-American finishes. He was a member of the staff which led the Spartans to their first men's track and field indoor conference championship in the 2016-17 and repeated in the 2017-2018 season. He helped coach the Spartans to it's highest NCAA Division III National Outdoor Championship finish 12th in 2018 and highest NCAA Division III National Indoor Championship finish ninth in 2019.

The 2018 women's team also posted its highest conference finish (third) and posted a program-best ninth-place showing at the national championships in 2019. UD own's the all-time conference record in men's and women's indoor shot put, men's and women's weight throw, women's outdoor shot put, and men's and women's hammer throw. As a student-athlete, Malm competed in the javelin and was a member of three Big Ten Conference championships as a member of the University of Minnesota track and field team.

He currently holds certifications from USATF (Level 2 Throws), USTFCCCA (Throwing Events, Strength and Conditioning), and the NSCA (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist). In 2016, Malm was invited to participate in the USATF Emerging Elite Coaches Camp.
