Jason Sachs Returns To Tufts as Women’s Fencing Head Coach

MEDFORD, MA (September 11, 2023) – The Tufts University women's fencing program welcomed back a familiar face as it was announced Friday the hiring of Jason Sachs as its new head coach going into he 2023-24 season. Sachs was team's head coach from 1992 until 2010, helping the program transition from club to varsity during that time.

"We are so happy to welcome Jason back to Tufts to lead our women's fencing program again," said Tufts Director of Athletics John Morris. "As a Tufts alum, our program's first-ever head coach, and a staunch advocate for its elevation to varsity status in 1998, Jason is personally invested in helping our fencers achieve excellence in all aspects of their Tufts' student-athlete experience. I am excited to watch our program continue its growth and ascent under Jason's leadership."

While at Tufts, he was the head coach for both the men's and women's club programs until the women's program was elevated to varsity status in 1998. From that point, he would lead the women's program exclusively until 2010. He was an NCAA Fencing Regional Committee member during his tenure, and also was a NCAA Fencing Regional qualification formula sub-committee member as well.

Sachs has been working most recently as the co-owner and coach at the Moe Fencing Club in Somerville, MA. He also serves as a trustee for the Moe Fencing Foundation and has helped coach and mentor young fencers in the Boston area for decades.

Sachs graduated from UC-Santa Cruz with a B.A. in psychology, while earning his master's from Tufts in 1990 in Applied Child Development. He also attained his Ph.D from Harvard University in 1998.

"Very excited to be back at Tufts and really impressed with how the team has grown since our initial varsity status," said Sachs. "I look forward to helping this year's team grow and to making Tufts a future landing place for the next generation of championship caliber fencers. I want to thank the athletic department for all its help during the recruiting process and for getting me off to a great start."
