Chris Barker Resigns As Southern Connecticut State University Director of Athletics & Recreation

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University Director of Athletics & Recreation Chris Barker has announced his resignation as the Owls' AD to pursue a professional opportunity within college athletics. Barker's final day on campus will be September 7, 2023.

Southern Connecticut State University will conduct a national search for its next director of athletics. Senior associate director of athletics Matt Letkowski has been named the interim director of athletics, in addition to his regular duties in compliance. Letkowski held the interim position prior to Barker arriving in New Haven.

"It has been an incredible journey working with Southern Connecticut's dedicated staff, talented student-athletes, and supportive community," Barker said. "I am grateful for the experiences and opportunities that I have had during my time here, and I am proud of the progress we have made together. I believe that the foundation we have built together will continue to thrive and contribute to the excellence of the athletic department. Thanks to Dr. Tyree, President Bertolino and Interim President Smith for the opportunity to lead SCSU Athletics & Recreation as well as the Owls student-athletes, coaches and staff."

Barker was named Southern Connecticut's fifth athletic director in program history in 2021. Prior to Southern Connecticut, he held the title of Deputy Director of Athletics at University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Under Barker's leadership, Southern Connecticut Athletics & Recreation has seen substantial growth, with an emphasis on creating a competitive academic, athletic, and social experience for Owl student-athletes. Some of the highlights and collaborations include the creation of the "A Good Day to Fly" program including the Owl Awards and AD Networking Social.

"It has been a sincere pleasure to work with Chris for these last two years," Vice President for Student Affairs Tracy Tyree said. "He is an amazing leader and has brought energy and innovation to Southern Athletics.  He led the department through the development of a strategic plan that will continue to serve as a roadmap for excellence.  The momentum Chris has generated will live on in the Owl Way as we help our student athletes thrive in all aspects of their lives."

Academically, the Owl's 500 student-athletes have comprised a GPA over 3.00 while 133 student-athletes have earned over a 3.5 GPA, and 34 student-athletes have a 4.0 or higher GPA over the last two years.

Athletically, during Barker's tenure, the Owls have competed exceptionally at the conference and national level with 10 NE10 Conference Championships, 11 NCAA postseason appearances, 29 NCAA Division II All-Americans, and Jordan Davis' NCAA Division II Javelin Championship for SCSU's 81st Individual National Championship.

"The support from the teams across Student Affairs, Interactive Communications and Marketing, Advancement and Alumni Affairs has been amazing," Barker said. "I look forward to seeing continued growth. I can't thank everyone enough for their commitment to our student-athletes' experience."

The Owls have experienced a 250% revenue increase and 30% increase in donor giving during the annual Owl Homecoming Campaign and set a record for Day of Caring support with $247,418 raised. Corporate partnerships have increased 80% under Barker's leadership and the Owls signed their first ever apparel agreement with Nike/BSN.

SCSU Athletics has seen numerous facility enhancements in the last two years, including the recent $1.8 million renovation of the Jess Dow Field Turf & Track Project. In addition to the new turf and track, Barker coordinated facility improvements at Pelz Softball Field, the Ballpark at SCSU, as well as the James Moore Field House. Barker also launched a full brand enhancement initiative, and the department is currently in the final stages of opening a student-athlete lounge and conference room.

"Finally, I must thank my amazing wife Emily and my two sons, Henry, and Beau, for believing in me and being my support system. They've been a pivotal part to the growth of SCSU Athletics & Recreation. As always, Go Owls!!!" Barker said.
