Eric Sturgis Picked as Capital’s Head Men’s Tennis Coach

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University Director of Athletics Dr. Darrell Bailey Sr. has announced the selection of Eric Sturgis as the school's Head Men's Tennis Coach.

Sturgis comes to Capital after most recently serving as the Associate Head Coach of both the men's and women's tennis programs at Colby College for two seasons.

"I want to thank Dr. Bailey, Coach Andy Garcia and the rest of the search committee for putting their trust in me to lead the Comets," said Sturgis. "I look forward to competing with the top of the OAC conference!"

Dr. Bailey was excited about the addition of Coach Sturgis for the men's tennis program: "I have confidence that Coach Sturgis will lead the men's tennis team well going forward. I know Eric will do a great job with the program under his leadership."

In his work at Colby, he aided the programs in qualifying for the conference tournaments for the first time and achieving the highest national rankings in program history.

In addition to his work at Colby, Sturgis has held head coaching positions at Iowa Central Community College, Western New Mexico University, Lindenwood University, Lake Superior State University and Mount Saint Mary College. In each of these roles, Sturgis has been particularly successful in program development and recruiting. Notably, as the head coach of Iowa Central, he mentored the team to a top-10 national ranking as well as four ranked individuals.

Sturgis has held other assistant coaching positions at the collegiate level at Morgan State University and Nicholls State University. Outside of the college game, Eric has coached four different high school teams and he has worked as a Club Manager and Tennis Director at multiple clubs in Michigan.

Sturgis is a 2014 graduate of Eastern Michigan University. In addition to his undergraduate degree, Eric completed his Masters in Sports Management in 2021, also from EMU. A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Sturgis has relocated to Columbus and is underway with his responsibilities as head coach. The Comets are set to take on Cedarville University this Saturday, September 9th at 6 p.m. in Sturgis' debut as head coach.
