Riggle Announces Retirement; Gregory to Direct Tennis Programs

Greencastle, Ind. - Scott Riggle, DePauw head women's tennis coach since 2000 and the head men's tennis coach since 2009, is retiring and Andrew Gregory, assistant men's and women's tennis coach at DePauw since 2010, has been promoted to head men's and women's tennis coach.

"Despite the fact that my whole life the greater part of the past two years has been spent fighting to get back on the court with our players and despite the fact that I know I still have something positive to offer our players, I am quite confident that I've made the right decision," Riggle said.

"Andrew (Gregory) is a big part of the reason that this decision has been so easy," Riggle added. "The teams are in great hands with Andrew. I'm planning to stay at DePauw as a volunteer assistant coach."

Gregory, who is in his 14th year at DePauw, was the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year in 2012 and the Central Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year in 2019.

Riggle's women's teams have posted a 335-196 record in 23 seasons, while the men are 163-130 in 14 seasons. The 2020 Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee led the women's teams to four outright Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference titles and one shared championship. In North Coast Athletic Conference play, the Tigers won four championships. Riggle was named the NCAC Women's Tennis Coach of the Year in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and was the SCAC Women's Tennis Coach of the Year seven times.

On the national level, Riggle directed the DePauw women to 13 of the program's 14 NCAA Division III team appearances including 11 straight from 2005 through 2015. DePauw also advanced to the 2003, 2006 and 2015 national quarterfinals.

Riggle coached Liz Bondi who won the 2007 NCAA Singles Championship and was the Honda Award winner as the top Division III female athlete. In the fall of 2004, Bondi and partner Elizabeth Steele became the first representatives in the history of Division III to win the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College Super Bowl, a feat which earned them a trip to the Division I indoor national championships.

"Scott is a valued member of Team DePauw and we are grateful for his leadership of both the men's and women's tennis program," said Stevie Baker-Watson DePauw associate vice president for student wellness and Theodore Katula director of athletics and recreational sports. "We support his decision to transition to a volunteer role and know that we will continue to see him at practice."

"We are fortunate to have Andrew already with us and be able to seamlessly transition into the head coaching role. Over the years, Andrew has received national recognition for his role as an assistant coach and we look forward to his career transitioning to head coach."

In addition to a public reception from 2-3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7, in the Lilly Center lobby, Riggle will be honored during the DePauw Alumni Tennis Association (DATA) Weekend, Feb. 2-3, 2024.
