PHILADELPHIA – Drexel University Director of Athletics, Maisha Kelly, and Director of Rowing, Paul Savell announced the hiring of Matt Weaver as the men's rowing head coach on Tuesday.

"We are very excited to have someone with Matthew's background join Drexel," said Kelly. "He has been a part of championship programs on the collegiate and international levels, which will help to elevate and improve the profile of Drexel men's rowing."

Weaver joins the Dragons after spending last season as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Philadelphia rival, Temple. With the Owls, he mentored the Varsity 8+ to a bronze medal at the American Athletic Conference Championships, the first medal for the V8+ at the event since 2016. He was also responsible for the creation and implementation of a year-round training program for the team.

"Drexel has consistently stood out as one of the best rowing programs in the country, and I am honored to have the chance to help lead this program to new heights," said Weaver. "Thank you to Maisha Kelly, Mary Mulvenna and Paul Savell for the opportunity. I can't wait to get to work!"

Prior to joining Temple, Weaver was an assistant coach at national powerhouse Washington. There, he was a part of the coaching staff that guided the Huskies to the 2021 IRA National Championship and a third place finish in 2022. He also helped UW to a championship in the 2022 Royal Henley Regatta Visitors Challenge Cup.

Internationally, Weaver was the U23 national team coach for Canada, co-leading the men's Varsity 4 to a world championship and the pairs to a place in the petite final.

Weaver also has coaching experience at La Salle, Winchester College and at Crescent Boat Club.

He earned his bachelor's in criminology from Penn in 2016 and a master's in education from La Salle in 2019.
