ASUN Announces Exploration of Future Basketball Championship Sites

ATLANTA - ASUN Conference Commissioner Jeff Bacon announced Tuesday that the league will launch an exploration of neutral-site options for future Men's and Women's Basketball Championships.

For the past 10 seasons, both the Men's and Women's tournaments have been hosted at multiple campus sites with games taking place on the courts of the higher seeds. The 2021 Championships were the only exception when Men's Basketball conducted its entire championship in Jacksonville, Fla., in Swisher Arena (Jacksonville) and UNF Arena (North Florida). That year, the Women competed on the main and Marietta campuses of Kennesaw State University.

Prior to the 2014 events, both tournaments were hosted by ASUN member institutions. The Women's Basketball Championship saw venues such as the Golden Panther Arena in Miami, Fla., (1993, 98), GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta, Ga., (1999) and UCF Arena in Orlando, Fla., (2001). On the Men's side, the tournament emanated from several locations including John Kresse Arena in Charleston, S.C. (1997-98), the Memorial Center in Johnson City, Tenn., (2008-09) and the University Center in Macon, Ga. (2010-13).

“The timing is right for us to go out and take a look at what options might exist to elevate the championship experience that we provide for our Men’s and Women’s Basketball student-athletes," Bacon said. "When we consider the ASUN footprint and the major markets that we occupy, with a reach of over 16 million homes, we owe it to our institutions to thoroughly examine what a neutral-site championship would look like.”
