SALEM, West Virginia - While the volleyball season at Salem came to a close sometime ago with the USCAA Fall Awards, there is still some exciting news about the future of Salem Volleyball. Former Ritchie County High School Head Coach Matt Carpenter has been named Head Coach of the Salem Tigers Volleyball program.Â
In regards to the recent hire, Salem Director of Athletics Alex Joseph had this to say, "We are extremely excited about having Matt taking the volleyball program in a new direction. He has had unprecedented success at Richie Country and we are looking forward to the winning attitude he's going to bring to the volleyball program."
As previously mentioned, Carpenter comes to Salem fresh off a success stint as Head Volleyball Coach at Ritchie County High School from 2014 through 2022. In that time, he amassed 281 career wins with 2 State Runner Up Finishes, 7 West Virginia State Tournament Appearances, 2 conference championships, 3 sectional titles, and 4 regional titles. He also served on the WVSSAC Volleyball Rules Committee. During his time with Ritchie County, he also served as assistant coaches in basketball, baseball, and track.Â
Carpenter began his educational career at Ohio Valley University, before transferring to Fairmont State where he completed an undergraduate degree in 2002. He also competed as a tennis student-athlete for the Falcons.Â
The Salem Athletics department is excited about what Coach Carpenter and the future of Salem Volleyball has in store for the 2023 fall campaign.
