NYU Names New Women's Head Soccer Coach

Scott Waddell Returns to Lead the Violets

New York University has hired Scott Waddell as its new women's soccer head coach.

Bringing a wealth of coaching experience to his new position, Waddell rejoins NYU after serving as an assistant coach (2020-22) and associate head coach (2023) at Brandeis University. While there, Brandeis achieved its best conference finish since 2010, placing third with a 4-3 record in the ultra-competitive University Athletic Association (UAA).

As NYU's assistant coach from 2016-20, Waddell helped the program achieve its highest-ever United Soccer Coaches national ranking at #15 in 2019 and to a second-place finish in the UAA with a 5-1-1 record in 2018, its best conference finish since 2002.

"It is my pleasure to welcome Scott back to NYU as our new head coach," said Stuart Robinson, NYU's Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of Athletics. "Scott distinguished himself from a list of excellent candidates with his passion for NYU and his desire to see the program among the best in Division III. With his energy and drive, we are excited for the future of the program. He understands the competitiveness of the UAA, and we look forward to even greater days for NYU Women's Soccer."

Waddell returns to NYU having gained both NCAA Division I and Division III coaching experience, while also adding international playing experience to his resumé.

A 2007 Columbia University graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, Waddell played four seasons as a midfielder/forward with the Lions' soccer team and served as a captain. He also played professionally for Pulau Penang FC (2008) and Real Mona FC (2009).

In addition to his NYU and UAA experience, Waddell also served as an assistant coach at Mount St. Mary's University (2022), as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at New Jersey Institute of Technology (2014-16) and as assistant coach at Columbia (2010-14).

"I want to thank Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of Athletics Stuart Robinson and the committee for this amazing opportunity," Waddell said. "I am really excited to return to the NYU women's soccer program. My time here as an assistant was really special and I am thrilled to build on the tremendous work and foundations set by (former head coach) Michelle Canning. I can't say how fortunate I feel to be given this opportunity to work with such amazing student-athletes at such a fantastic institution."

A member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, Waddell is a native of Kingston, Jamaica, and resides in New York City.
