FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist University Vice President and Director of Athletics Dave Eavenson announced on Wednesday that head women's tennis coach John Blackburn is stepping down from his role at Methodist to accept a head coaching position at a NCAA Division II institution.

Blackburn came to Methodist in 2015 and guided the team to back-to-back NCAA Division III Tournament appearances in his first two seasons. In eight seasons with Blackburn at the helm, the Monarchs earned an overall record of 117-58.

"We want to thank John for all of his hard work and efforts on behalf of the university, athletic department and women's tennis team," Eavenson said. "We wish John all the best as he moves forward with the next chapter in his career."

Under Blackburn's leadership, Methodist saw sustained success against USA South competitors, losing just four regular-season matches to conference opponents (54-4) during his eight-year tenure. In 2017, he was named the USA South Women's Tennis Coach of the Year, and during his time at Methodist his student-athletes earned a total of 35 all-conference accolades, including 16 first team all-conference selections.

The Methodist women's tennis team had an excellent 2023 campaign, posting a 13-6 overall record with an 8-1 record during conference play. The Monarchs advanced all the way to the USA South Championship – the team's fourth appearance in the title match with Blackburn as coach.

"I'm so grateful to Methodist University for the opportunity to coach here," Blackburn said. "I'm especially thankful to the players here who I've had the honor to work with and who have enriched my life. I'm proud of the championships we've won together over the years, but even more proud of the young women so many of you have grown to be. I'm also very thankful to Dave Eavenson, DeeDee Jarman, and Bob McEvoy for their tireless support of our women's tennis team. Go Monarchs!"

A search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
