Coaches Munger, Carbeck Promoted to Lead Rowing Teams

MEDFORD, MA (August, 16, 2023) - Noel Wanner, Tufts' Director of Rowing since 2015, has stepped down from that position to accept a role as assistant coach at Division I Dartmouth College. George Munger, who has guided Tufts' men's rowing team since 2019, will take over as Interim Director of Tufts Rowing.

Additionally, Lily Carbeck, previously the women's rowing associate head coach for the Jumbos, has been promoted to Interim Head Coach of the women's team.

During his tenure at Tufts, Wanner was the director of the program as both squads emerged among the top Division III teams in the nation. As head coach of the women's team, he led the Jumbos to back-to-back NCAA Championship race invitations in 2022 and 2023. They finished sixth nationally in 2022, then moved up to third place at the NCAA competition this past spring. For 2023 Tufts was also the only squad to medal in all races at the National Invitational Rowing Championships and earned the team points trophy. In 2016, Wanner's women's team received an at-large NCAA berth which at the time included only the first varsity competing. Tufts placed sixth in the grand final.

Under Wanner, Munger was hired and coached the men's team which also made two straight national appearances at the IRA Championships. The Jumbos were the national runner-up in 2022 when IRA's was only a first varsity competition, and they finished fifth this past spring with both the first and second varsity boats in action.

Promoted to head coach of the Tufts University men's rowing team during the summer 2019, Munger was previously an assistant coach for the Jumbos for three years starting in 2016. He served as the program's recruiting coordinator. Munger was an assistant coach at Boston University prior to coming to Tufts. He went to the University of Minnesota where he rowed in the men's heavyweight 8+ for three years and in the men's lightweight 8+ for a year.

While in college Munger started coaching at Twin Cities Youth Rowing, where he remained until moving to Boston as an IRL fellow. As part of Community Rowing, Inc., he completed an intensive yearlong Advanced Certificate in Rowing Leadership fellowship program for future leaders through a curriculum based on both academic and experiential learning methodologies.

Carbeck, a key member of the Jumbo women's coaching staff for the two NCAA qualifying seasons of 2022 and 2023, is entering her fifth season at Tufts. She joined the Jumbo staff for the 2019-20 season. Prior to Tufts, she was an assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts for the women's rowing team. During that time she primarily coached the third varsity eight, working to build the depth of the team.

Starting her coaching career at Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club (PVRC), Carbeck was the varsity boys' head coach and assistant for the masters' team. After PVRC she moved to Boston to coach the competitive boys at Community Rowing, Inc. Raised in Belmont, Mass., Carbeck graduated from UMass where she designed her own major of youth development and coaching.
