Amel Muhamedagic To Take Over Soccer Program in 2024

Longtime Assistant Coach Will Become Program's Second Head Coach Next Fall

EDMOND – Amel Muhamedagic will become the next head coach of the UCO soccer program following Mike Cook's retirement at the end of the 2023-24 academic year, the UCO athletics department announced Wednesday.

Muhamedagic has been on the staff as an assistant coach since 2007. In 2021, he was promoted to associate head coach. And now in 2024, he'll be just the second head women's soccer coach at UCO since the program began 25 years ago.

"I am humbled and honored to be named the next University of Central Oklahoma head women's soccer coach," Muhamedagic said. "I would like to thank Stan Wagnon and the administration for this opportunity. I appreciate their guidance and mentorship over the years. I am excited to continue coaching and supporting these exceptional student-athletes in achieving their goals here and beyond. I also look forward to honoring and celebrating coach Cook in his last season and continuing the tradition of excellence both on and off the field."

"Amel has played an integral role in the consistent success of our program," UCO Director of Athletics Stan Wagnon said. "In addition to all of the success, he's entrenched in the local community and the largest youth soccer program in the state. Amel is the type of person UCO needs leading its women's soccer program."

Muhamedagic came to UCO in 2007 and immediately had an impact with the Bronchos. That season, UCO posted 13 shutouts and had a school-record nine All-Lone Star Conference selections while reaching the third round of the NCAA Division II national tournament.

Muhamedagic has helped lead UCO to 13 shutouts in a season twice, 14 shutouts once, and a school-record 15 shutouts in 2014. Central Oklahoma has reached 15 NCAA tournaments in 24 years, with 10 of those coming while Muhamedagic was on the sidelines. The best season in school history, 2018, Muhamedagic helped lead the Bronchos to nine All-MIAA selections and again reached the third round of the NCAA national tournament, finishing 22-2-0 on the year.

UCO has won 205 games with Muhamedagic on the sidelines.

Cook announced Monday that 2023 will be his final season leading the Bronchos. The 25th-year head coach, No. 4 on the all-time wins list in Division II women's soccer history, will make one final run with the Bronchos this fall before passing the baton to Muhamedagic in 2024.
