RALEIGH, N.C. (Aug. 11) The Saint Augustine's University (SAU) Department of Athletics has appointed Professor Lamont Sparrow as the new Director of the SAU Spirit Squad. His appointment comes after a thorough and competitive selection process.

Professor Sparrow serves as the Department Chair for English and has more than 13 years of cheerleading and stunting experience as he has served as an assisted cheerleading coach at Fayetteville State University. In addition, he is certified in cheerleading and first aid. 

"I'm thrilled to have Professor Sparrow on board to lead our Spirit Squad. His unique perspective and innovative ideas will undoubtedly bring a fresh and exciting dimension to the Spirit Squad's activities and events," said SAU Interim Athletic Director Stephen Latson. "His short journey with the cheerleaders has been nothing short of remarkable, and this new role is a testament to his exceptional leadership skills, creativity, and ability to inspire others. With his leadership skills, I believe he will undoubtedly lead the Spirit Squad to more extraordinary accomplishments and memorable experiences for all involved. "

Professor Sparrow's appointment marks an exciting chapter in SAU Athletics, as the SAU Bluechips placed second in the Rep Your Squad Challenge during the 2023 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Basketball Tournament in Baltimore, MD. In addition, Professor Sparrow inherits a team with a strong tradition of cheerleading excellence, with SAU Senior Temia Powell returning as a member of the 2022-23 All-CIAA cheerleading squad.
