Frank Speth to Lead Men’s Soccer on Interim Basis

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University Director of Athletics Dr. Darrell Bailey Sr. has announced that Frank Speth will lead the men's soccer program as the Interim Head Coach for the 2023 season. Speth rejoins the program after previous head coach Alan Yost departed last month for a club coaching position.

"I am very appreciative of Coach Speth for his willingness to step in as our interim head coach," said Dr. Bailey. "I can already tell that he is focused on leading the team to the same standard of success they had under Coach Yost. It is good to know someone of his coaching caliber has accepted the challenge and supports our efforts!"

Since his first stint with the program, Speth has served in various coaching roles at Ohio Premier Soccer Club here in central Ohio and he continues to coach with the club today.

Speth previously coached at Capital as an assistant coach in 2016. That year, Speth assisted the program to a 14-4-2 record which included the program's longest winning (10) and unbeaten (14) streaks in recorded program history. The team also ranked as high as 18th in the nation that season.

Prior to his tenure with the Purple and White, Speth spent 17 years as the associate head coach at Ohio State University. While coaching the Buckeyes, Speth helped the team to an overall record of 174-127-51. OSU won Big Ten championships in 2000, 2007, 2009, and 2015 during that stretch. Additionally, the 2007 team finished as national runner-ups. At Ohio State, Speth assisted in the mentorship of three All-Americans and 21 future professional players.

Before his time at Ohio State, Speth held coaching positions at Illinois State, his alma mater Fresno State, the Illinois Youth Soccer Association and the Columbus Crew pre-professional U16 and U18 teams.

Before entering the coaching profession, Speth played four years of professional soccer in the American Indoor Soccer League/Major Indoor Soccer League.

Frank holds a degree from Fresno State University in German studies. He is married to his wife Cindy and has two daughters, Melissa and Whitney.

Speth will be joined on the sidelines this year by current women's soccer head coach Matt Ogden as well as current assistant coaches Mitchell Hughes and Geovanny Salinas. The coaching staff will welcome the team back to campus for preseason training later this month.
