Hope College Draws Fan Support Like Few in the Nation

Hope College received fan support for multiple sports like few in the nation during the 2022-23 school year.

In all, Hope ranked in the top 10 in NCAA Division III for average home attendance in five sports:
  • First in men's and women's basketball;
  • Second in women's volleyball;
  • Third in women's soccer; and
  • Ninth in men's soccer.
The Flying Dutchmen and Flying Dutch basketball teams both topped the nation in average home attendance for the 14th time in 15 seasons and drew a total of 50,516 fans to DeVos Fieldhouse over 33 games.

Men's Basketball averaged 1,830 fans — 25,622 total over 14 home games. The University of Mount Union (Ohio) was second with an average of 1,229.
It is the 24th time the Flying Dutchmen have topped the nation in men's basketball attendance. Hope also led Division III in home men's basketball attendance in 2021-22, 2019-20, 2018-19, 2017-18, 2016-17, 2015-16, 2014-15, 2013-14, 2012-13, 2011-12, 2010-11, 2009-10, 2008-09, 2007-08, 2006-07, 2005-06, 2004-05, 2003-04, 2002-03, 1998-99, 1995-96, 1990-91, and 1983-84.

Women's Basketball drew an average of 1,310 fans with 24,894 total over 19 games. Husson University (Maine) finished second with an average of 939.


The Flying Dutch led Division III in home attendance for the 16th time overall. They joined national attendance-leading Hope teams from 2021-22, 2019-20, 2018-19, 2017-18, 2016-17, 2015-16, 2014-15, 2013-14, 2012-13, 2011-12, 2010-11, 2009-10, 2008-09, 2005-06, and 1989-90.

Women's Volleyball averaged 778 fans at DeVos Fieldhouse — 7,693 total in 12 games. Calvin University was first with an average of 778.

Women's Soccer averaged 380 fans at Van Andel Soccer Stadium — 3,424 total over nine games. Lynchburg University (Va.) finished first with an average of 538.

Men's Soccer averaged 442 fans at Van Andel Soccer Stadium — 3,093 total over seven games. Occidental College (Calif.) was first with an average of 1,015.

Hope also placed in the Top 30 nationally for home attendance in two more sports:
  • Men's Lacrosse, 25th with an average of 286 fans — 2,859 total over 10 games at Van Andel Soccer Stadium; 
  • Football, 27th with an average of 2,716 fans — 13,579 total over five games at Ray and Sue Smith Stadium.
