Scots Promote Washington to Senior Associate AD

College Awarded NCAA DIII Strategic Alliance Matching Grant

MARYVILLE – Maryville College is celebrating the promotion of Brittney Washington to Senior Associate Athletics Director for Excellence and DEI.

Washington transitioned into her new duties over the summer to prepare for the upcoming academic year.

She just completed one year on the job with the Scots and has made quite the impression. So much so that Maryville College is using a recently awarded NCAA Division III Strategic Alliance Matching Grant to promote her.

"Brittney came to Maryville and hit the ground running," Scots Director of Athletics Sara Quatrocky said. "She immediately made a positive impact in the lives of our student-athletes by creating strong partnerships on campus, and she was able to navigate her relationships to gain resources to help aid student-athlete success.

"Anytime we can promote and secure a rising star in this industry, it's important to do so. There are so many times we can lose great employees, and with this grant it allows us to help Brittney continue her growth in athletic administration right here at Maryville College."

Serving on President's Cabinet
Just this week, Washington was asked to serve on President Bryan F. Coker's Cabinet until a new Staff Council Chair is elected. She is participating in the Maryville College President's Cabinet retreat this week as well as other upcoming Cabinet meetings.

"I'm extremely thankful to be awarded the NCAA Division III Strategic Alliance Matching Grant," Washington said. "I'm so appreciative to work with such great leadership in Dr. Coker and Sara Quatrocky, who continue to help shape and develop me within my role.

"Closing out my first year here at Maryville has been nothing short of amazing. I've gotten the opportunity to work with an exceptional group of student-athletes and have been able to help foster relationships across campus to promote their success. I look forward to our continued success!"

The Simpsonville, South Carolina, native has created academic excellence programming, a new-look summer orientation in conjunction with admissions and student affairs, is planning fall new student orientation for all students, and already helped increased retention in the student-athlete population.

Part of those efforts include providing and coordinating education and training for all student-athletes, around DEI topics while developing programs that ensure diverse and inclusive role models and mentors for the athletics department.

"Brittney is a deeply dedicated, hardworking staff member who gets things done," said President Coker, who recently was elected to the NCAA Division III Presidents Council. "She is driven by an unwavering commitment to student-athletes and their success in all facets of campus life.

"We are extremely fortunate to have Brittney as a member of our campus community, and I look forward to seeing all she will accomplish in this expanded role."

Increased Roles in Sports Sponsorship, Compliance
The NCAA Division III Strategic Alliance Matching Grant is designed to provide financial assistance to Division III conferences and member institutions committed to enhancing ethnic minority and gender representation in mid- to senior-level intercollegiate athletics administrative positions.

Mid- to senior-level administrative positions should include significant responsibilities in a variety of the following areas: strategic planning; budget management; fundraising; campus and NCAA compliance; sport oversight; student-athlete welfare issues and initiative; academics; diversity and inclusion initiatives; and staff oversight/management.

As part of her increased responsibilities, Washington now serves as sport supervisor for eight varsity sports: volleyball, women's basketball, both cross country teams, both tennis teams and both track and field squads. As a sport supervisor she will assist coaches in meeting their yearly admission goals, plan and manage budgets, and initiate increased efforts in student-athlete welfare. She will also take over the department's NCAA, Collegiate Conference of the South, USA South and institutional compliance efforts.
