Monopoli Announced as New Head Field Hockey Coach

Worcester, Mass.--Worcester State Director of Athletics Michael Mudd is pleased to announce the hiring of Sophia Monopoli as the new Head Coach of the Worcester State Field Hockey Program. Monopoli, will become the program’s 15th head coach.  The squad begins its first season competing in the MASCAC Conference with an automatic NCAA Championship birth on the line.

“Sophia continues the great success we have had recently of hiring field hockey coaches who had formerly been associated with the Lancers Field Hockey team in some capacity” says Mudd. “Combined with her experience as an Assistant Coach at the college level and her familiarity with the MASCAC and Worcester State, I have no doubt that we she will be successful in this role and the strong culture that the team possesses will remain intact.”

Monopoli returns to Worcester State after a prolific four-year career as a starting forward for the Lancers where she was a member of the first ever Little East Conference Championship team in 2019 and was named to the Little East All-Conference team that same year. She finished her career as a Lancer with 70 games played, recording 21 goals and 18 assists.

“I would first like to thank Athletic Director Michael Mudd for this opportunity as I feel extremely honored to be named Head Coach of the Worcester State University Field Hockey Team” says Monopoli. “As a WSUFH Alumni, this program means the world to me. I hope to build upon the winning culture with our talented 2023 team. My goal is to bring great energy, competitiveness and provide all of my student-athletes with an experience they will always cherish.”

Prior to her arrival at Worcester State, Monopoli served as the assistant field hockey coach at Fitchburg State where she was responsible for managing player goals on and off the field along with developing the team’s practice schedule and plans. The Falcons, under Monopoli, progressed from two wins to 10 wins during her tenure. She is returning to Worcester, where she graduated from Holy Name High School in 2016 as a four-year varsity member of both the field hockey and softball programs for the Napolean’s, being named a Central Mass All-Star in both her junior and senior seasons. Monopli also serves as a head coach for Level Up Field Hockey in Worcester, MA and has coached for Baystate Field Hockey Summer Games.

“Sophia worked very hard during her playing career at Worcester State and developed into a very important player in the program’s success” states Mudd. “She was loved by her teammates and coaches for her team-first mentality, positive attitude, and work ethic. I have no doubt these attributes will rub off on her players moving forward.”

The Field Hockey team begins their season on August 19th with their first game scheduled for September 1st against Clark University.
