Southern Wesleyan Announces Promotion of Stewart to Head Cross Country Coach

Central, SC - Southern Wesleyan is excited to announce the promotion of Trey Stewart to Head Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach.  He will also continue as the Assistant Coach for the Warriors' Track and Field programs.

"I am very pleased to announce Coach Stewart as the Head Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach," commented Director of Athletics Julia Reininga, "he has done a wonderful job and I have seen a lot of growth in him. It is exciting to have an amazing Godly leader in this position."

Stewart joined the Warriors in 2021 as an assistant coach for both the Cross Country and Track and Field programs.  He worked directly with both the distance and cross country runners during that time.  Under his guidance, the Warriors saw three male athletes (Ronan O'Neill, Thomas Macagg and Drew Jones) and two female athletes (Abbey Frock and Macey Morgan) receive All-Conference recognition.  Ronan O'Neill went on to be named the Men's Cross Country Freshman of the Year during the 2022 season while he served as the coach.

Prior to coming to Southern Wesleyan, Stewart worked as the assistant coach for Cross Country and Track and Field at Shannon Forest Christian School from 2019 to the spring of 2020.  He also served as a volunteer track coach for the City of Greenville in 2018 where he assisted in organizing practices and sharing knowledge on the sport of Track & Field.

Stewart attended North Greenville University in college where he competed for the Crusaders while completing his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Exercise Science in 2019.  He was a two time All-Conference Third Team finisher in the 800 meters at the Conference Championship.  In March of 2019 at the Florida Relays, he was a member of the 4x800 meter relay team who finished with a time of 7:58.79 to set the current school record in that event.

"I am honored and grateful to accept the position of Head Cross Country coach," said Stewart.  "I am reminded of the story of Joseph.  God gave him favor among man and exalted Joseph because he gave glory to God.  I can't help but testify to God's faithfulness."
